For the second consecutive game, Newberry College jumped out to a lead and never gave it up as the Wolves improve to 2-0 for the first time since the 2017-18 season with a 74-67 victory over the Southern Wesleyan Warriors in the Conference Carolinas-South Atlantic Conference Challenge Tournament in Franklin Springs, Ga.
Newberry scored the first seven points of the game, led by 17 at halftime and never trailed for a second consecutive game to open the season.
Malakhi Stremlow led a balanced attack with 12 points,
Makhi Rivers added 10 points while
Devario Sheppard,
James Lovorn and
Malik Joseph each chipped in with nine points.
Stremlow had an excellent all-around game adding 10 rebounds, six assists and a steal.
Drew Robinson added 8 points, four assists, three rebounds and a steal.
Newberry outrebounded Southern Wesleyan 35-24, leading to 16-0 second chance point advantage.
The Wolves led by 17 at the half and continued to hold a double-digit advantage nearly the entire second half including a 74-62 lead with 1:54 remaining in the game.
Newberry shot 54% from the floor in the second half, making 15 of 28 shots.
The Wolves led the Warriors 39-22 at the half behind a stellar defensive effort, holding Southern Wesleyan to just under 28 shooting (8-29). Inside the 3-point arch the Wolves held the Warriors to just 4-of-20 shooting.
Meanwhile Newberry made 45% of its shots including 5 of 12 from 3-point range and 6-of-8 free throws.
Joseph and Lovorn each had seven points while Sheppard, Stremlow and Rivers all added six points.
The Wolves play their last exhibition game of the year Wednesday at Campbell before the home opener against Lenoir-Rhyne November 20
