Jess Tomkins scored 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots as the Newberry College outscored Emory & Henry 33-25 in the second half to earn a 60-53 South Atlantic Conference victory at Eleazer Arena.
The win improved Newberry's record to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the SAC.
Hannah Nimmo added 14 points and six steals,
Ryian Howard had a career-best 12 rebounds as the Wolves outrebounded the Wasps 60-53, forced 25 turnovers and came up with 12 steals.
Newberry trailed Emory & Henry 28-27 at halftime and 30-29 with 7:57 left in the third quarter before putting together an 8-0 run and never relinquished the lead.
Tompkins six of the teams eight points during the run and assisted on the other basket by Howard as Newberry built a 37-30 lead with four and a half minutes left in the third quarter.
The Wasps rallied to tie the game at 41, but
Caylin Moment's 3-point shot with 36 seconds left in the quarter gave the Wolves a 44-41 advantage after three periods.
Three-point baskets by
Rickell Brown and
Marykate Kent sandwiched around another basket by Tompkins build the Newberry advantage to nine, 49-43.
The Wasps eventually chipped away and cut the lead to three, 56-53 with 26 seconds remaining, but Nimmo knocked down six consecutive free throws to seal the victory.
Nimmo made seven of eight free throw attempts over the final minute and a half to keep Emory & Henry at arm's length.
The Wolves will return to action Wednesday at Mars Hill before returning to Eleazer Arena next Saturday to host Wingate.
