Wolves Get Transcontinental Victory 62-55

Box Score Drake Downs scored a season-high 19 points and scored four crucial points over the final 50 seconds as Newberry College knocked off the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves 62-55 in Anchorage.

Downs made 8-of-11 shots from the floor, 3-of-4 free throws, grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots as the Wolves improved to 3-2 on the season.

The Wolves led 26-25 at the half and built the lead to 10 on a 3-point basket by point guard Makhi Rivers with 5:57 left in the game.

But UAA cut the lead to three, 58-55 before Downs slammed down on the Seawolves off a feed from Malakhi Stremlow with 50 seconds remaining to give Newberry a 58-53 advantage.

Twenty seconds later UAA again cut the lead to three, 58-55 before Downs made both three throws with just 20 seconds left to put the game out of reach.

Rivers, who made all eight free throw attempts and finished with career-best 13 points and three assists, put on the finishing touches on with a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to account for the final score.

After traveling to Greeneville, Tennessee and back Tuesday, the Wolves left Newberry at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning to make the 4,300-mile journey to Anchorage.

The Wolves, who never trailed in the second half, outscored the Seawolves 32-24 on points in the paint and outrebounded them 39-30.

Newberry shot over 52% from the floor in both halves and made 22 of 41 shots overall for just under 54% while hitting 13 of 15 free throws for just under an 87% clip.

The Wolves also played stifling defense, holding the Seawolves to 30% shooting and just 55 points despite UAA launching 29 more shots (70-41) then Newberry.

Devario Sheppard added 11 points and James Lovorn chipped in with eight as the duo combined to make 7-of-11 shots overall including 3-of-6 3-point attempts.

All five starters for Newberry shot at least 50% from the field.

In the last two games the Wolves have held their opponents under 58 points and 38 percent shooting.

The two teams meet again Saturday night in Anchorage at 9:15 p.m. Eastern time.
