Newberry Battles Hard but Falls to Tusculum

Box Score Greenville, TN-- In a hard-fought matchup that saw both teams battle back and forth, Newberry came up short against Tusculum, falling 74-66 despite a determined second-half rally. Here's how the game unfolded, quarter by quarter:

First Quarter:
The game began with Newberry coming out strong, quickly establishing an aggressive pace. Hannah Nimmo opened the scoring for the Wolves, going 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. Newberry's defense was also sharp, forcing Tusculum into tough shots and a couple of turnovers. Though the Pioneers managed to stay within striking distance, their offense struggled to find a rhythm. Meanwhile, Newberry's depth and efficiency were evident, as they capitalized on both ends of the floor. Despite a late push from Tusculum, Newberry closed the quarter with a 21-13 lead.

Second Quarter:
In the second quarter, Tusculum regrouped and began to find their rhythm. The Pioneers were able to score in the paint and also took advantage of quick trips to the free-throw line. However, Newberry responded well, with Caylin Moment capitalizing on the Wolves' lead by converting a layup. MaryKate Kent also added a big three-pointer after a Tusculum layup. The teams went back and forth, exchanging baskets as the clock wound down. As the buzzer sounded, Tusculum took a slim 32-30 lead into halftime, thanks to a late bucket from Ni'Kiah Chesterfield that gave them the slight edge.

Third Quarter:
Coming out of halftime, Tusculum carried over the momentum they had built in the second quarter. The period started with a quick three-pointer from Hannah Nimmo. However, Tusculum's Monique Shim and Jenna Kallen responded with points in the paint. Nimmo answered back with another three-pointer and went 2-for-3 from the free-throw line. In this quarter, Tusculum dominated in the paint, scoring 14 points compared to just 4 for Newberry. The Pioneers' inside presence was a key factor, and by the end of the period, Tusculum had extended their lead to 56-45, holding an 11-point advantage.

Fourth Quarter:
As the final period began, Tusculum opened the scoring with a layup. Newberry's Caylin Moment quickly responded with a layup of her own and also got to the free-throw line. Jess Tomkins also made her mark, going 4-for-4 at the line, while Hannah Nimmo hit a three-pointer. Newberry capitalized on turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of them, and also added eight second-chance points. Despite the Wolves' efforts to close the gap, Tusculum held firm, maintaining their lead. With the clock winding down, the Pioneers secured the victory, winning 74-66.

Newberry's record now stands at 2-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Wolves will face the Wasps of Emory & Henry on November 30th for a 2:00 PM contest.
