Men’s Soccer Losses Lead In Second Half To Fall 3-1

The Newberry College Wolves men's soccer team (4-8-1, 3-6-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the second half, but Catawba responded with three goals to beat the Wolves 3-1 at Smith Road Complex.

After a scoreless first half, senior Harry McDonnell, playing in his final home game, scored off an assist from fellow senior Ethan Orozco to give the Wolves the momentum and the lead.

It was McDonnell's fifth goal of the season and the 13th of his Newberry career.

But the Indians responded with goals in the 62nd, 72nd and 81st minute to earn the victory.

Goaltender Jacob Cotton made four saves for the Wolves.

The Wolves currently sit in ninth place tie with Carson-Newman in the SAC standings, two points behind Wingate.

Newberry needs a victory at Anderson Wednesday and losses by Wingate at Coker and Carson-Newman at Tusculum to have a chance to qualify for the South Atlantic Conference postseason tournament.

The Wolves win the tiebreaker over Wingate based on Newberry's 1-0 victory at Wingate earlier this season but lose the tiebreaker to Carson-Newman due to a loss to the Eagles.

The top eight teams advance to the SAC Postseason Tournament which begins November 9.
