Salem, VA: Newberry men's wrestling opens their 2024 season at Roanoke College.
The Wolves sent 7 sophomores to compete at the Southeast Open at Roanoke College.
Leading the team was sophomore Ethan Mccullough who placed 3rd place in his division. Mccullough competed at 133 pounds and opened with a dominant performance. He won by TF in his first match 18-1. Not slowing down, Mccullough wins with a MD in his next match 11-0. Mccullough continued with this pressure, winning by decision in his third match 4-0. In his 4th match, Mccullough puts up a tough fight but loses by decision 4-1. Mccullough ends the day winning by a forfeit.
Sophomore Keagan Judd competed at a 149 pound division and placed 6th place. Judds day started with a bye, moving him straight to his second round. Judd blows through his second round with ease, winning with a TF, 15-0. Judd has a tough fight in the third round, but comes out on top winning by decision 15-0. Judd battles in his fourth round and comes out on top, winning by a MD, 21-12. Judd kept his momentum going, winning his next round by decision, 12-6. He was finally stopped in his sixth round, losing by DEF, 7-3.
Sophomore Cael Alderman competed in the 149 pound division winning two of his four matches. Match one, lost by MD 12-0, Match two, BYE. Match 3, won by MD 12-1. Match 4, won by MD 12-2. Match 5, lost by DEC 10-7.
Sophomore Cole Mccullough competed in the 141 pound division winning one of his three matches. Match 1, BYE. Match 2, won by DEF 8-0. Match 3, lost by a pin. Match 4, lost by pin.
Sophomore Dennis Virelli competed in the 157 pound division winning two of his four matches. Match one, BYE. Match two, won by MD 16-4. Match three, won by DEC 9-2. Match four, lost by DEC 5-4. Match five, lost by DEC 8-5.
Sophomore Nick Humphrys competed in the 157 pound division. Match one, BYE. Match two, lost by decision 6-1. Match 3, lost by DEC 6-3.
Sophomore Tristan Malette competed in the 133 pound division winning one of his three matches. Match one, lost by DEC 15-8. Match two, BYE. Match three, won by DEC 7-0. Match four, lost by a pin.
