Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Wolves Earn Share Of SAC Title And #1 Seed With 4-3 Victory

Who knew a 2-1 win on the road nearly two months ago would be so important?

Who thought a decade ago after losing the program's first 17 games that today would happen?

The Newberry College women's field hockey team (15-3, 11-3) knew, and they came through with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Converse to clinch a share of the program's first ever South Atlantic Conference title before an enthusiastic crowd at Setzler Field.

With the win, the Wolves broke last year's record for most wins in a season and will host the semifinals and finals of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Friday, November 8th and Sunday, November 10th at Setzler Field.  The semifinals will be played at 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. with the final at 2:00 p.m.

Both Newberry and Limestone finished the regular season with 11-3 records in the SAC, but the Wolves won the tie-breaker based on the 2-1 win at Limestone back on September 10.

Newberry never trailed in the game leading 1-0 at the end of the first quarter, 2-1 at halftime, and 4-2 heading in the fourth quarter.

Tamsin Bangert, the school's career leader in goals, assists and points, eclipsed the 100-point mark for her career on a penalty shot just over two minutes into the second half to give the Wolves a 3-1 lead.
It was Bangert's 10th goal of the season, 38th of her career to go along with 25 career assists and 101 career points.

After Converse cut the lead to 3-2, Wibien Dahmen scored the eventual game-winning goal on an assist from Emma Westbrook midway through the third quarter to increase the lead back to a pair of goals at 4-2.

The Valkyries closed to within a goal, 4-3, with just under four and a half minutes remaining, but the Wolves closed out the game.

Newberry grabbed the early lead on a brilliant goal from a sharp angle by Lieke Varenkamp off an assist from Parker Keeler just over six minutes into the game.

After Converse tied the game at 1-1, Westrook scored on a straight on, long range goal to make it 2-1 with a minute and a half remaining before halftime.

It was Westbrook's 14th goal of the season to go along with her third assist of the year to give her a team leading 31 points.  She now has 36 career goals in 35 career starts to go along with eight career assists and 80 career points.

The 11 conference victories also tied last year's school record for most SAC wins in a season.

The South Atlantic Conference Postseason Tournament opens Monday with quarterfinal games hosted by the #3 and #4 seeds while Newberry (#1) and Limestone (#2) receive byes to Friday's semfinals.
