Wolves Lose Overtime Heartbreaker In SAC Semifinals

Mount Olive ruined Newberry's run to the SAC Postseason Tournament championship game with a 4-3 overtime victory at Setzler Field.

The Wolves had leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 and dominated the fourth quarter with the game tied at 3-3 but couldn't push across the elusive fourth goal.

Mount Olive scored on their first chance in overtime, 1:36 into the extra period, to earn a trip to the SAC championship game Sunday against Limestone.

Payton Keeler, who earlier won the SAC Elite 23 award as the top student-athlete at the championship, got the Wolves on the board early in the first period, scoring her second goal of the season 4:41 into the game.

The Wolves took the 1-0 into halftime before the Trojans tied the game just under three minutes into the third quarter.

First team All-SAC forward and Newberry's all-time leading scorer Tamsin Bangert scored her 11th goal of the season and the 39th of her career just a minute and a half later to grab back the lead a 2-1.

After Mount Olive tied the game at 2-2, Parker Keeler scored her seventh goal of the season at the 12:20 mark of the third quarter to give the Wolves a 3-2 advantage.

Yet again the Trojans tied the match just seven seconds before the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth, the Wolves dominated, outshooting the Trojans 7-0 and collecting 12 penalty corners to none for Mount Olive, but couldn't get the go-ahead goal, sending the game into overtime.

Despite the loss, the Wolves ended the year with the most victories in a season (15), earned the #1 seed in the SAC Tournament and hosted for the tournament for the first time while advancing to the SAC Tournament semifinals for a fifth consecutive season.
