Newberry College completed the 2024 season with a 27-7 loss to Emory & Henry at Setzler Field.
The two teams were tied at 7-7 at the half, but the Wasps outscored the Wolves 20-0 in the second half.
The shorthanded Newberry offense relied on three quarterbacks with all three,
Ja'Corey Martin, Â
Keith Desaussure, who moved from receiver to quarterback this week, and true freshman Jaxon Schiedt, playing in the first quarter.
Martin ran the ball nine times for 38 yards and the Wolves only score while
Dwayne Wright led Newberry with 45 yards on seven carries.Â
Kenmane Brunson added 31 yards rushing on two carries, including a 28-yard run in the fourth quarter. Desaussure had the longest play from scrimmage for Newberry, a 35-yard run on a double reverse in the third quarter.
Wright moved into the top-10 in career rushing at Newberry with 1,828 yards rushing in his Newberry career moving past Chad Tackett (1999-2001).
Junior linebacker
Devron Williams continued to shine as he led the Wolves defense with 10 total tackles, including a quarterback sack and a pass break up.
The defense was especially tough against the run, holding Emory & Henry to 62 yards on 33 rushing attempts.
The Wolves defense came up with numerous big plays to stop Emory & Henry drives in the first half.
Late in the first quarter,
KyHeim Bethea and
KeSean Glover combined to stop Wasps running back Jordan Jackson for a loss of two yards on second down from the Emory & Henry 11-yard line, leading to a punt.
That defensive stand led to the Wasps punting from their own nine-yard line setting up the Wolves' offense at the Emory & Henry 43-yard line after the punt.
Newberry turned that defense series into a touchdown as the Wolves drove 43 yards in six plays.
Big plays included back-to-back runs of nine and four yards by
Trakell Murray to give Newberry first down at the Emory & Henry 11-yard line.
A three-yard run by Desaussure was followed up by Martin's seven-yard scoring run to 7-0 lead on the third play of the second quarter.
The defense responded on the next drive as Keyliln Roach and
Trey Irby teamed up to stop Emory & Henry on fourth and one at the Wasps' 48-yard line.
After Emory & Henry tied the game at 7-7 midway through the second quarter, the Wasps drove to the Newberry 36-yard line on their next possession, went for it on fourth and two when
Charles Smith sacked quarterback Cole Lambert for a 15-yard loss to turn the ball over on downs.
On the final drive of the half,
Devron Williams' sack of Lambert on second down at the Wolves 15-yard line, eventually forced the Wasps to attempt at 43-yard field goal on the lats play of the half, which they missed and the scored remained tied at 7-7.
In the first quarter, after the Wasps drove to the Wolves 43-yard line, Irby and
Tanner Funderburk stuffed Wasps running back Jordan Jackson for a loss of one, forcing them into a second and long and an eventual punt on the first possession of the game.
