The Newberry College offense and special teams account for plays of 79, 77, 50 and 46 yards to spark the Wolves to a 41-25 South Atlantic Conference victory over the Barton Bulldogs.
With the victory the Wolves improve to 3-4 and 3-2 in the SAC ahead of next Saturday's Homecoming contest against Limestone.
Quez Spells 79-yard touchdown run, the first play from scrimmage after a Barton touchdown cut the lead to 26-18, put Newberry back up by 15 points, 33-18 late in the third quarter.
Trakell Murray's 15-yard scoring run midway through the fourth quarter put the game out of reach to account for the final score of the game and the Wolves' 16-point margin of victory.
Spells 79-yard run is tied for the seventh longest run in Newberry College football history with Kelton Tinda's 79-yard run against Elizabeth City State in 2006.
Barton ran 83 plays to just 40 for Newberry, but the Wolves averaged 9.5 yards per play to just 4.4 for the Bulldogs.
Quarterback
Reed Charpia completed 7 of 12 passes for 182 yards including a 50-yard touchdown pass to Rico Dorsey, Jr., with no interceptions.
Dorsey finished with three catches for 119 yards and the score.
Spells finished with 89 yards on just two carries, Murray added 34 yards on six carries and
Dwayne Wright added seven carries for 23 and a pair of scores.
Barton had 204 yards rushing to 198 for the Wolves, but the it took the Bulldogs 47 plays to reach their total while just 28 for Newberry.
After taking a 20-10 lead into halftime and stopping Barton on their first drive of the second half,
Tyleke Mathis ripped off a 77-yard punt return to give the Wolves the ball on the Bulldog 20-yard line.
Four plays later Wright scored his second touchdown of the game from four yards out to give Newberry at 26-10 lead.
The first quarter featured only two full possessions with the Wolves taking the opening kickoff and punting after accumulating one first down and 19 yards and Barton nearly possessing the ball the rest of the quarter, holding the ball for 19 plays, accumulating seven first downs, taking 11:38 off the clock, driving 87 yards and scoring to take a 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs scored on an end around trick pass from wide receiver Jayden Flood-Brown to Nazir Garrett to take the lead with just 1:15 left in the quarter. Sixty-eight of the Bulldogs 87 yard were gained on the ground.
The second quarter was dominated by the Wolves, outscoring Barton 20-3 to grab a 20-10 halftime advantage.
The Wolves outgained the Bulldogs in the second quarter 157-80 including a 112-to-36-yard advantage through the air.
On the first play of the second quarter, Charpia hit Dorsey, Jr. on a 50-yard scoring strike, the Wolves longest of the season to tie the game at 7-7.
After forcing a punt on Barton's next possession, Newberry drove from its own 20-yard line to the Bulldog 24-yard line with
Bryce Earley converting a 46-yard field goal to give the Wolves their first lead of the game at 10-7. Early is now a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts longer than 40 yards.
A Barton fumble gave the Wolves a first down on the Bulldog 12-yard line and two plays later, Wright scored his first touchdown of the night from six yards out to increase the lead to 17-7.
The two teams traded field goals in the last 1:40 with Early hitting from 22-yards out and Barton responding with a field goal on the last play of the half to make the score Newberry 20, Barton 10.
The Wolves did not turn the ball over and punted only one time the entire game.
Newberry returns to Setzler Field next Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. as the Wolves host the Limestone Saints.
