Box Score Newberry College (1-4, 0-2) ran for 197 yards, but it wasn't enough as the #17 ranked Lenior-Rhyne Bears (5-1, 3-1) outlasted the Wolves 24-3 in Hickory in a South Atlantic Conference game.
Quez Spells had 83 yards rushing on just seven carries,
Dwayne Wright added 75 yards on 17 attempts and
Trakell Murray chipped in 19 yards on three carries to pace the Wolves offense.
True freshman quarterback
Coleman Gray came off the bench late in the first quarter to lead the Wolves offense the rest of the game.
It was Gray's first collegiate action, and he completed six passes for 61 yards and led the Wolves on their only score of the game, a seven play, 45-yard drive that culminated in a Bryce Early 36-yard field goal midway through the second quarter to cut the Bear lead to 10-3.
Gray completed three out of four passes for 29 yards on the drive while Spells had a 19-yard reception and a 21-yard run to set up Early's field goal.
Early has converted 8-of-9 on field goal attempts this season while 18 of his 23 kickoff attempts have gone for touchbacks.
Punter
Burke Nettles averaged 41 yards on six kicks with three inside the 20-yard line.
Devron Williams led the Wolves defense with nine total tackles, six of them solo while
Matt Moore had seven total tackles with two and a half for loss.
Colby Taylor had five tackles and two quarterback pressures,
Rodney Wright registered a quarterback sack and
Keylin Roach had an interception which he returned for 40 yards.
The Newberry defense limited the Bears to just 18 first downs and 114 yards rushing.
