GAFFNEY, S.C. – In search of their first road win of the season, the Newberry College men's basketball team fell to Limestone on Wednesday night, 92-72.
Jalen Johnson followed up his career day on Saturday with a 19-point effort on 7-of-11 shooting with five made 3s against the Saints.
James Lovorn reached double figures for the fifth straight game, tallying 16 points to go along with a team-high four assists.
Malik Joseph (13 points) and
Caleb Byrd (11) also had double digit efforts for Newberry (3-11, 2-7 South Atlantic Conference).
The Wolves raced out to a 16-8 lead by the first media timeout of the game with 14:37 left in the opening half thanks to seven early points from Joseph and four from
Booker Cusaac.
Newberry extended that lead to 12 by the next media timeout at the 11:30 mark and later to 16 points, 31-15, after Johnson poured in eight straight points.
The Wolves eventually carried a 46-40 lead into halftime and shot 17 of 32 (53.1%) from the floor and made 7 of 15 3s (46.6%) for the half.
Limestone (9-7, 5-3) evened the game at 47 two minutes into the second half. The Scarlet and Gray quickly regained a two-point advantage before a Saints 3-pointer gave them a lead they would never again relinquish.
The Saints used a 16-4 run to make it 66-53 with 10:37 left. A Lovorn 3-pointer trimmed the deficit to 70-61 a few minutes later, and Joseph's layup made it 73-65 with 6:24 remaining.
Limestone outscored the Wolves 19-7 the rest of the way for the final score.
Newberry returns to Eleazer Arena a week from today (Jan. 24) for a home date with Mars Hill. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
