NEWBERRY- The Newberry College Volleyball team opened their 2023 season as they hosted the Newberry College Invitational on Friday (Sept. 1). The Wolves would split the day going 1-1 with a 3-0 win against Belmont Abbey and a 3-1 loss to Auburn-Montgomery.
Match One
The Wolves would sweep the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey taking the sets (25-22, 25-11, 25-19) to give head coach Kiko Santos his first win as a Wolf. The offensive attack would rely on the arms of sophomore right side
Samantha Shaffer, and freshman outside hitter
Anna Schneider, who both led the way with seven kills on the afternoon match. Senior
Taylor Hall would have five kills in the win
Annie Dill would have 13 assists. On the defensive end for the Wolves,
Kannyn Boyd would lead the way with 11 digs, while
Madison Watson would total three blocks. Â
Match Two
The Wolves fall in the final match of the day against the Warhawks of Auburn-Montgomery 3-1. Shaffer would lead the Wolves offensive attack, totaling 12 kills on the evening. Dill would lead the Wolves with 14 assists and 13 digs on the evening. Senior Libero,
Olivia Bradley would tack on 12 digs on the evening.
The Wolves would be back in action Saturday (Sept. 2) as they will finish up the second annual Newberry College Invitational as they will play Arkansas Ft. Smith at Noon, then will finish up the evening playing the Patriots of Francis Marion at 7 p.m. in Eleazer Arena (EST).Â
