NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's soccer team will open their 2023 season today (Sept. 1) as they will be hosting the Pacers of University of South Carolina Aiken.
The Wolves scheduled the Pacers after their match with USC Beaufort was canceled due to inclement weather.
Scouting the Wolves
- The Wolves were picked seventh in the 2023 South Atlantic Conference preseason coaches' poll released on Friday (Aug. 15).
- Head Coach DeeDee Alexander enters her tenth season as Newberry's head coach (12th season at Newberry). The Wolves are coming off of a 5-11-1 2022 campaign where they made the SAC postseason tournament for the second straight season.
- The Wolves look to build off last season returning preseason all-SAC members Jaidyn Jacobs and Emily Castaneda.
Jacobs, a senior forward was selected to the Preseason all-SAC first team. In 2022, Jacobs led the Wolves with shots on goal. Jacobs earned all-SAC honors her sophomore season in 2021.Castaneda, a sophomore defender was selected to the Preseason all-SAC third team. In 2022, Castaneda started in 16 of the 17 matches as a defender her freshman season. The Wolves return top scorer from last year in Becca Lipp
Scouting the Pacers
- The Pacers enter the 2023 season picked eighth in the Peach Belt Conference preseason coaches' poll. USC Aiken is coming off of a 7-4-4 2022 campaign where they earned a postseason birth in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.
- The Pacers are led by Adam Kleman who is entering his first season as the head coach for the Pacers.
