NEWBERRY, S.C. – The No. 5 Newberry College (32-7, 14-5 SAC) baseball team suffered a loss in the series opening game to the Bulldogs of Wingate University at the Smith Road Complex on Friday, April 14.
Sophomore
Jomar Lugo (San Sebastian, P.R.) and junior
Jacob LeBron (Lexington, S.C.) were the only two Wolves who were able to record a base hit in the contest, both coming in the night inning. The Wolves left four runners stranded on the evening
Newberry was able to make contact on the ball throughout the night, but the Bulldogs were able to jump out to a three-run lead in the top of the second. It wasn't until the third inning that Newberry found a runner on the base paths, though it came from a defensive miscue by Wingate.
The Bulldogs added another run in the top of the fifth in what became a tightly contested pitchers dual over the remaining innings, however with the Bulldogs taking the early advantage, the Wolves were unable to post a run on the board in the contest while Wingate added another, dishing out the 5-0 loss to Newberry.
The two teams return to action on Saturday, April 15 as the teams play a pair of conference contests starting at 1:00 p.m.
