ANDERSON, S.C. – In what turned into another mid-week slug fest with the Trojans of Anderson University, the No. 9 Newberry College (26-5) baseball team was able to take away the 20-10 victory in a game that lasted just under four hours and saw 33 hits scattered on the evening.
Leading the way for the Wolves in the category was junior Jacob LeBron (Lexington, S.C.) who turned in four hits in the contest while bringing around a trio of runs. Senior Braylin Marine (Freeport, N.Y.) matched that RBI total while junior Henry Gibson (Walterboro, S.C.) and sophomore Kade Faircloth (Oviedo, Fla.) each recorded a pair on the night.
The Wolves kicked off the contest with back-to-back doubles to move a pair of runners into scoring position. Marine forced a defensive miscue in his first at bat of the evening that brought around the pair of runners, but the Wolves weren't done yet as a stolen base and a single by Gibson brought around the third run of the frame and gave Newberry the 3-0 lead.
While the Trojans were able to get a pair back in the bottom of the first, the Wolves truly put the game out of reach in the top of the second as they added 10 runs to the scoreboard in the frame. Starting the inning off with three straight singles, the Wolves were able to plate a pair and add another to their tally with a single just one batter later. A pair of defensive miscues and another single brought around four more runs in the inning before the Wolves forced the second pitching change of the inning with two more added to the score. For good measure they hung one on the new pitcher as well giving them the 13-2 advantage.
Anderson added a run in each of the next three innings while Newberry was able to add a run in the top of the fourth to take the 14-5 lead into the fifth inning. The Trojans added a pair in the fifth, but Newberry was up to the task and added a pair right back in the top of the sixth while Anderson notched another in the bottom. Anderson again outscored the Wolves 2-1 in the seventh, but it would turn out to be too little, too late for the Trojans as Newberry added three additional runs to their tally in the top of the ninth to secure the 20-10 victory.
The Wolves now turn their attention to their upcoming weekend conference series with the Wasps of Emory & Henry. The two teams kick-off their weekend with a single game on Friday, March 31 starting at 3:00 p.m.
