Wolves Fall in Close Matchup to Wasps in Regular Season Finale

NEWBERRY, S.C. – In their final game of the 2022-23 regular season, the Newberry College women's basketball team (8-20, 4-14 South Atlantic Conference) fell to the Emory & Henry Wasps (8-18, 5-13 SAC) by a final score of 63-58.

On senior day, senior guard Giulia Bongiorno (Rome, Italy) was tied for the most points by any player for the Wolves. She and sophomore guard Tyla Paraha (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) each scored 10 points in the contest. This season's leading scorer had the second highest total on the team with nine points in the loss. Wiseley was also the team's second leading rebounder with five rebounds. Fellow redshirt senior center Tyla Stolberg (Brisbane, Queensland, Australia) led the team in rebounding with six rebounds in the game. Stolberg also added three steals and two blocks to her statline.

The Wolves and Wasps quickly got off to a quick start, trading baskets inside of the first minute of the game. It took the Wolves almost three minutes to score again. Wiseley netted the first four points of the game for the Wolves. Following a Wasps' three pointer, Bongiorno opened her day's scoring, cutting the lead back to four with just over six minutes to play in the first quarter. Wiseley then cut the lead to two points and junior guard Faith Putz (Des Moines, Iowa) sank a lay up to tie the game once again just over a minute later. But the Wolves then went cold from the field, missing their next two shots and scoring again just under two minutes later when sophomore center April Rummery-Lamb (Darwin, NT, Australia) netted a free throw for her first point of the game. Paraha completed an and-one to give the Wolves 14 first quarter points, but a pair of free throws from the Wasps inside of 20 seconds to play in the quarter meant Emory & Henry took a three-point, 17-14 lead into the second quarter.

Junior guard Payton Cronen (Louisville, Ky.) immediately tied the game with a three point shot to open the second quarter, but the Wasps reclaimed their lead 15 seconds later on a jump shot. Following that jump shot, the Wolves would not score for almost another three minutes as the Wasps put up eight points in that span. Wiseley ended the drought by sinking the back half of a pair of free throws. With six minutes to play in the first half, Wiseley cut the lead to five with a jump shot of her own. For the next roughly five minutes, the Wolves and Wasps traded baskets, with the Wasps taking a one-point advantage during that span. With six seconds left in the first half, Stolberg completed an and-one opportunity to end the half, cutting the lead to just three points for the Wasps, 31-28.

Each team missed a shot to open the second half before the Wasps opened the scoring in the third quarter. Cronen and Bongiorno each sank a layup over the next two minutes as the Wolves and Wasps kept pace with one another. Another two minutes later, Putz sank a three pointer to cut the lead four points, 39-35, halfway through the third quarter. Paraha and Bongiorno combined for three points over the next minute-and-a-half as the Wasps' lead was back down to three points. Following a three-point shot from Emory & Henry, Paraha sank the final field goal of the quarter with a layup with 1:28 to play in the third quarter. The Wolves forced a missed three pointer from the Wasps with four seconds to play in the quarter, and the Wolves entered the final quarter down four points.

The Wolves and Wasps went back-and-forth scoring with one another in the final quarter, with Emory & Henry gaining a one-point advantage over the final ten minutes. With the lead already at four points, the lead for the Wasps increased to five points by the final whistle as the Wolves fell 63-58.
