Wolves Pick Up a Pair of Polar-Opposite Wins on the Road Against NGU

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – In what could not be two more opposite ways to secure a win, the Newberry College softball team (12-5, 2-0 South Atlantic Conference) defeated the North Greenville Crusaders (8-6) in both games of their doubleheader. The Wolves first took a six-inning, run-rule victory over NGU by a final score of 13-1, then needed nine innings to complete a 9-6 victory over the Crusaders.

Sophomore Lindsey Foster (Griffin, Ga.) picked up her fifth win of the season in the first game. She threw four innings, gave up three hits and struck out a pair of batters in the win. Junior right fielder Vanessa Wilson (Loganville, Ga.) went three-for-three at the plate and picked up an RBI. Junior second baseman Tori Rose (Moncks Corner, S.C.) drove in four runs for the Wolves.

Junior pitcher Ally Sullivan (Campobello, S.C.)started game two. She allowed five hits in five innings pitched and struck out seven batters. She received no decision in the game. Freshman Jayla Jackson (Dillion, S.C.) received her first career win in the circle by pitching the eighth and ninth innings against the Crusaders. She allowed no runs and just one hit as she struck out a pair. Freshman shortstop Melanie Carr (Davie, Fla.) hit the go-ahead RBI bunt single in the top of the ninth inning.

Game One:
Despite the offensive outburst in the game and having base runners early, the Wolves did not score their first runs until the third inning. With a runner reaching on a single and an error, junior designated player Sierra Brogdon (Leesburg, Ga.) knocked a three-run home run over the fence to open the scoring. With the two batters following Brogdon finding their way on base and into scoring position, Rose picked up the first two of her RBIs with a single to plate the fourth and fifth run for the Wolves.

The Wolves went down in order in the fourth and put up another run in the fifth inning with a RBI-single from Rose. The Wolves more than doubled their score in the top of the sixth inning.

Freshman Yahaira Williams led off the sixth inning with her first career hit, a triple to right field. Carr followed with a single to score Williams and kicked off the scoring for the inning. With two runners on, Wilson singled up the middle to plate two more runs. Wilson scored on the next at-bat as senior first baseman Lindsey Mitchell (Fairfield, Ohio) hit the Wolves' second triple of the inning. Rose once again hit an RBI single, scoring Mitchell, and then scored herself when junior third baseman Hailey Hill (Summerville, S.C.) hit a home run for the seventh run of the inning.

The Crusaders went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, enacting the run-rule and securing the lopsided win for the Wolves, 13-1.

Game Two:
The Wolves struck in the first inning of game two as Brogdon continued her good day at the plate by picking up a one-out RBI with two runners in scoring position.

The Crusaders tied the game in the bottom of the second. Both teams went quietly in the third inning before Newberry plated three runs in the top of the fourth.

With the bases loaded, Mitchell and Rose each hit RBI ground outs for the first two runs of the inning. Then Hill singled through the left side to score the final runner that initially loaded the bases for the Wolves in the inning.

The Wolves added a run on a two-out single from Brogdon in the fifth inning. The Crusaders cut the Newberry lead to just one run though by plating three in the bottom of the fifth.

That score held until the bottom of the seventh when a lead-off North Greenville triple was driven in one batter later on a sacrifice fly.

Both teams scored the runner placed on second in the eighth but only Newberry managed to score in the ninth inning.

With two runners in scoring position, Carr's bunt single scored the first run of the inning. Freshman catcher Molly Mattas (Duncan, S.C.) singled, plating the second run of the inning for the Wolves on the next at-bat. Sophomore second baseman Mady Brown (Winston-Salem, N.C.) notched the third and final run of the inning with an RBI single to score Carr.

Jackson retired the Crusaders in order in the bottom of the ninth, securing the victory for the Wolves and her first career win.

The Wolves return to South Atlantic Conference play Wednesday, March 1 as they travel to take on the Wingate Bulldogs. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 P.M.
