Wiseley's Double-Double Not Enough As Wolves Fall to Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – In the team's last road conference matchup of the season, the Newberry College women's basketball team (8-18, 4-12) fell to the Tusculum Pioneers by a final score of 78-42.

Redshirt senior center Ericka Wiseley (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) added another great solo performance to her fifth-year resume as she recorded a double-double in the loss. Wiseley led the Wolves in both points, with 12, and rebounds, with 11. Fellow redshirt senior center Tyla Stolberg (Brisbane, Queensland, Australia) was the team's second leading scorer as she recorded eight points. Sophomore center April Rummery-Lamb was the second leading rebounder with seven rebounds.

The first quarter did not start ideally for the Wolves as the team missed three shots before scoring their first basket after just over three minutes had elapsed in the game. Luckily the team's defense had held the Pioneers to just two points of their own and the basket, scored by Wiseley, tied the game at two points. The team missed five shots before scoring again off of a free throw from Stolberg. That free throw ended a 9-0 run from the Pioneers but was immediately followed by an 11-0 run     Wiseley ended with her second basket of the game. Another three-point shot from Tusculum ended the first quarter and Wolves entered the second frame down 25-5.

Just over two minutes had elapsed as the first basket of the second quarter sank, a three-point shot from Tusculum. The Pioneers added four more to their lead before Stolberg sank her first field goal of the gamewith just under five minutes to play in the first half. Rummery-Lamb then converted an and-one following a Pioneers' turnover. But Tusculum regrouped and took the first half down to a minute-and-a-half outsourcing the Wolves 13-3 over the previous two minutes. The Wolves collected the final four points of the half on layups by Wiseley and senior guard Giulia Bongiorno (Rome, Italy) and the Wolves entered the locker room down 45-17.

The Wolves kept the third quarter the closest of the day. After four Tusculum points and a steal from Stolberg, the Wolves netted their first basket just over two minutes into the second half with a layup from senior guard Holly Davies (Camberley, Surrey, England) and then added three more on a three-point shot from junior guard Faith Putz (Des Moines, Iowa). Over the next two minutes, Stolberg recorded both of the Wolves' baskets over the next two minutes before the team entered a scoring drought. Tusculum added four points during that drought before a free throw added another point for Newberry with three-and-a-half minutes to play in the third quarter. Almost three minutes elapsed as Wiseley netted two free throws, the final points of the quarter. The Wolves forced five missed shots from the Pioneers following Newberry's final field goal of the quarter while missing only two after the Pioneers' final field goal of the quarter. Newberry trailed Tusculum 58-29 after three quarters.

The Wolves had their most productive quarter of the game in the fourth quarter. The Pioneers added eight points to their lead before Bongiorno and Rummery-Lamb combined for three points as the game approached five minutes remaining. Bongiorno had five of the team's 13 points in the fourth quarter but the early deficit from the Pioneers was too much to overcome as the Wolves fell to Tusculum 78-42. The Wolves return home to the friendly confines of Eleazer Arena for their final two games of the season. The team first hosts Wingate on Wednesday, Feb. 22 for a 5:30 P.M. and then hosts Emory & Henry next Saturday, Feb. 25 for senior day. Tipoff for Saturday's game is scheduled for 2 P.M.
