Wolves Drop Nonconference Matchup with Fayetteville State

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Returning to the court for the first time in two weeks, the Newberry College men's basketball team dropped a nonconference road decision to the Fayetteville State Broncos on Saturday afternoon, 67-58.

Sophomore Caleb Byrd led the Wolves in scoring with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting and a pair of 3s.

Joining him in double figures were Devario Sheppard (12 points) and Drake Downs (10). Booker Cusaac grabbed a team- and season-high 10 rebounds on the afternoon and Zay Thornton registered his first points as a Wolf in the game.

The Wolves (2-7, 1-3 South Atlantic Conference) led for much of the first half, at one point holding a 19-12 advantage with 8:38 to play after Sheppard made a jumper in the lane.

Fayetteville State (6-7, 1-2 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) evened the game at 19 three minutes later, and eventually took a 32-30 lead into halftime.

The Broncos extended their lead to 43-34 by the first media timeout of the second half before Newberry responded with a 9-0 run to tie the game with 12:21 left and forced a Bronco timeout.

Out of the timeout, James Lovorn's 3-pointer and Cusaac's jumper gave the Wolves a 48-43 lead with 9:35 on the clock, their first since leading 28-27 with two minutes remaining in the opening half.

Fayetteville State then went on an 10-4 run to retake a 53-52 lead with just over five minutes remaining and didn't relinquish it the rest of the way.

The Wolves outscored the Broncos 30-26 in the paint and had 13 points off turnovers to the Broncos' five. Newberry starts the New Year with a home game against SAC foe Wingate on Wednesday (Jan. 3) at 7:30 p.m. in Eleazer Arena.
