HARROGATE, Tenn. – Playing in their first South Atlantic Conference game of the season, the Newberry College men's basketball team lost a road battle to No. 15/22 Lincoln Memorial Saturday, 89-50.
Drake Downs' nine points led the way for the Wolves and
Booker Cusaac and
AJ Thompson both had eight. Cusaac also had a team-high six rebounds, and the eight points were a season-high for Thompson.
Newberry (1-4, 0-1 South Atlantic Conference) played Lincoln Memorial (6-2, 1-0 South Atlantic Conference) tight in the opening portion of the first half as the teams were tied on four occasions in the opening eight minutes. The Wolves held a 19-17 advantage with 12:33 to play in the first before the Railsplitters closed the half outscoring Newberry 29-11 to take a 46-30 lead into halftime.
The Wolves struggled to find a groove in the second half and LMU extended its lead over the final 20 minutes.
The Scarlet and Gray have a week off before returning to action next Saturday (Dec. 9) on the road at UVA Wise. Game-time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
