Wolves Fall in Five Set Thriller to Catawba for Last Home Match

NEWBERRY, S.C.- The Wolves volleyball team (7-19, 5-12 SAC) fell in a five-sets to the Indians of Catawba College (11-10, 9-8 SAC) this evening in Eleazer Arena.  

The Wolves came out strong in the first set, starting with an early lead. The Wolves gained momentum with the help of back-to-back kills from Watson and one from Dill to give them a 14-10 cushion. The Indians did not let the Wolves get away easy with them going on a three-point run to catch up with the score 17-16. Watson killed two in a row again to aid the Wolves in a four-point run making the score 23-18. The Wolves finished the first set 25-19.  

The second set was much like the first with both teams going point for point keeping the fans on their toes. The Wolves gained a five-point lead early, but the Indians fought back to tie the score 17-17. Hall slammed one down aiding the Wolves to side out and gain a 20-17 cushion. Ava Brown finished the set with a kill with the final set score 25-22.  

Both teams went point for point in the third set up until the Indians slipped away from the Wolves going on a four-point run making the score 23-21. Ava Brown aided the Wolves to 23 points with a kill, but the Indians took the third set 25-23.  

Wolves had a late start in the fourth set but with the help of two kills from Kate Brown the Wolves were able to get in front with the score 12-10. The Wolves maintained the lead until the Indians tied the score 21-21 and then finished the fourth set 25-22.  

The Wolves trailed the Indians in the beginning of the fifth set. The Wolves were able to shrink the Indian's lead with the help of a kill from Hall and McMahon to make the score 8-6. The Wolves fought hard, but Catawba took the fifth set and the match 15-11.  

Team Leaders 

Taylor Hall led the Wolves with 13 kills, Ava Brown with 12, and Madison Watson with 10. Olivia Bradley led the pack with 26 digs and tagged a service ace. Kannyn Boyd and Dill also tagged a service ace, Boyd also had 14 digs for the evening. Watson led the Wolves with eight blocks, Kate Brown, and Dill with three.  

Career Highs 

  • Madison Watson set two new career highs this evening with 10 kills and eight blocks.  
  • Ava Brown set two new career highs of 12 kills and 13 points in a match.  
  • Kate Brown set a new career high of three blocks in a match.  
  • Annie Dill set two new career highs of 44 assists and three blocks in a match.
