ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Engaged in a back-and-forth affair for the entirety of the evening, the Newberry College men's basketball team fell on the road to Elizabeth City State by a final of 70-65 on Tuesday. The game featured 14 ties and 19 lead changes, and neither team led by more than six points throughout.
A pair of Wolves scored 16 points –
Caleb Byrd and
Jalen Johnson – to lead the offensive attack for the Scarlet and Gray.
Byrd did his damage on 5 of 10 shooting and connected on all five of his free-throw attempts. Johnson shot 5 for 11 and made all four of his free throws; as a team, the Wolves made an impressive 22 of 27 from the charity stripe (81.5%).
Also reaching double-figures were
Booker Cusaac (11 points) and
Devario Sheppard (10).
Newberry was able to force 15 Viking turnovers and managed 16 points off of them. The Wolves also showed an inside presence with 32 points in the paint.
The team returns to Eleazer Arena for another non-conference battle on Wednesday, Nov. 29 against Francis Marion. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
