NEWBERRY – The Newberry College women's basketball team will open their 2023-24 campaign as they will host the Southeast Regional Challenge in Eleazer Arena this weekend.
The Wolves will be a part of a challenge that will feature North Greenville University, Barton College, and Augusta University. There will be four games played (two on Friday and two on Saturday).
The Wolves will tip off the challenge Friday as they will host the Crusaders of North Greenville University at 5:00 p.m. Friday and finish the Challenge facing the Bulldogs of Barton College Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
Scouting the Wolves
- The Wolves are entering the 2023-24 campaign picked 11th in the preseason coaches' poll. The Wolves return great leadership along with a sharpshooter in Payton Cronen. Cronen led the wolves in three-point field goal percentage shooting 42% from beyond the arch. Ella Pearson is another starter returning for the Wolves this season. Pearson started in 26 of the 28 games last season for the Wolves.
- Other players who have made their mark in the preseason for the Wolves is junior center April Rummery-Lamb, and senior guard Dyani Burke. Rummery-Lamb had a team season high five blocks against Lenoir-Rhyne in the 2022-23 season.
Scouting the Opposition
- North Greenville was picked 11th in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll. The Crusaders return their second-best scorer in Abi Oates. Oates started in every game for the Crusaders, averaging 11.3 points per game and shot a team best 35% from beyond the arch.
- Barton was picked 8th in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll. The Bulldogs return their top scorer in senior guard Lauren Walker. Walker averaged 16.2 points per game in the 2022-23 season and earned first team all-conference honors.
