NEWBERRY – Playing in their final game of the 2023 season, the Newberry College men's soccer team lost a 2-1 decision to the visiting Anderson Trojans on a frigid night at the Smith Road Complex.
The Wolves (3-9-2, 1-8-2 South Atlantic Conference) and Trojans (7-5-3, 5-3-3 South Atlantic Conference) had a spirited defensive battle to open the game as neither team scored until the 27th minute.
In that 27th minute,
Filip Tmusic found senior
Uriel Zarracan for his career-high seventh goal of the season, a mark that also places Zarracan in a tie for sixth most in the conference at season's end.
Anderson responded in the 43rd minute to bring the game to 1-1 at halftime.
The defensive stalemate resumed until the Trojans scored the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute. Newberry had a flurry about 10 minutes later following a corner kick, narrowly missing a header that bounced off the right post.
On the rebound,
Ethan Orozco's shot was deflected enough to lose speed and allowed Anderson's keeper to make the save.
Seraphin Guetan made the Wolves' final push in the 84th minute, but his shot was blocked out of bounds and the Wolves were unable to register a goal on the ensuing corner kick.
Goalkeeper
Jacob Cotton made two saves on four shots faced to bring his season average to five per game, tied for third most in the conference.
Collectively, Newberry closes the regular season with the fourth highest shooting percentage in the SAC (.148).
