WILSON, N.C. – The Newberry College football team fell on the road to Barton Saturday afternoon 34-17.
The Wolves moved and took care of the ball as junior quarterback
Jy Tolen took the starting roll in the second half. Tolen threw for 75 yards and ran for 52 yards in the afternoon. Sophomore running back
Dwayne Wright ran for 74 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.
The Wolves got the scoring started as they got the ball down to the five-yard line but took a
Lawson Reel field goal to make it 3-0.
Barton would answer back in the second quarter outscoring the Wolves 20-7 taking a 20-10 lead in the half.
Dwayne Wright would punch one in from six yards out to make it 10-6 with 8:23 to go in the half.
The Wolves would take advantage of the lone turnover of the game to start the second half as the Barton Kick returner would struggle to maintain possession of the kickoff and the Wolves recovered in the red zone. Six plays later, Wright would punch it in for the second time from seven yards out to cut the Bulldog lead to 20-17.
The Bulldogs would score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and the Wolves could not recover as Barton would finish the game with 412 total yards on the afternoon.
The Wolves (3-3, 2-2 SAC) will come back home next Saturday for the 2023 Homecoming weekend as they will host the Catawba Indians at Setzler Field. Kickoff will be at 4:00 p.m.
