GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Newberry College football team suffered a 28-24 loss to Limestone on a touchdown with one second left in regulation Saturday at Saints Field in Gaffney, S.C.
Sophomore running back
Dwayne Wright had 21 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown. The Wolves ran for 220 yards total as a team. The Wolves got on the board first with a
Bryce Earley 42-yard field goal to give the Wolves a 3-0 lead with 1:50 remaining in the first quarter. Senior linebacker
AJ Valentine led the wolves with eight tackles on the afternoon.
Limestone would take a 7-3 lead on the ensuing drive with 13 plays for 75 yards. The Wolves would take back the lead with little time left in the half as
Jaden Kinard would jump on a muffed punt that bounced into the endzone to give the Wolves a 10-7 lead shortly before the half. Limestone would strike back before the half to take a 14-10 lead.
The Wolves and the Saints went blow-for-blow in the second half as the Wolves took the opening drive down the field ending with a
Trakell Murray seven-yard touchdown run to give the Wolves a 17-14 lead. Limestone would strike back the ensuing drive making it 21-17.
In the fourth quarter both offenses would stall on drives until 3:56. The Wolves would get the ball back and would drive 73 yards resulting in a
Dwayne Wright three-yard touchdown run to give the Wolves a 24-21 lead. The Saints would march down the field to score the game winning touchdown with one second left on the clock to win 28-24.
The Wolves (4-5, 3-4 SAC) will be back home for Senior Day next weekend as they will host Wingate at Setzler Field. Kickoff will be at 1:00 p.m.
