Men's Golf Finishes in 2nd Place at Barton Fall Intercollegiate

Tom Hull finishes second overall

SNOW HILL, N.C. – Following a week off from competition, the Newberry College men's golf team earned a second-place finish at the Barton Fall Intercollegiate tournament on Monday and Tuesday.

Playing three rounds over the last two days, the Wolves had a combined team score of 871 to finish +7 for the tournament behind host Barton's two-under 862.

Newberry was 10 strokes clear of Mount Olive (881) in third, 17 ahead of Belmont Abbey (888) in fourth, and 28 up on Catawba (899) in fifth.

Tom Hull finished second overall in a field of 97, carding a three-round total of 213 to finish three-under, two shots back of the lead. In the first round, Hull shot a one-under 71 and followed that with a five-under 67 in the second round to sit atop the leaderboard after two rounds.

In the final round Hull shot a 75, and for the tournament led the field in par 5 scoring, averaging a 4.50 and shooting six-under on such holes. He also tied for the second-most birdies with 14 in the tournament.

"This was a very nice performance by our young team," Head Coach/Director of Golf Howard Vroon said. "They were able to play their way to a four shot lead through two rounds.  Well done and a big accomplishment for them. The next time we get in that position, we will be better equipped to continue to play the way that got us there. I'm very happy that these Wolves are seeing the fruits of their work, and how they are growing and improving this fall. Again, well done Wolves."

Benny Fischer turned in a 218 for the week and finished in sixth place with scores of 73-73-72.

Herman du Plessis recorded a four-under 68 in the first round, joined with a 74 and 78 to finish with a final score of 220 in 13th place.

Freshman Jesper Gruendemann was a shot behind du Plessis, combining scores of 72-74-75 to finish in a tie for 14th place, giving the Wolves four golfers in the top-20.

Fellow freshman Jack Earle's trio of rounds was 77-78-77 for a three-round total of 232.

The Wolves will compete again next week for the final time this fall at the Currahee Collegiate Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 23 and 24 at the Currahee Club.
