5-Goal Game Gives Men's Soccer Senior Day Win Over Shorter

NEWBERRY – On Senior Day at the Smith Road Complex, the Newberry College men's soccer team utilized a season-best five-goal game – three of which came in the second half – to topple the visiting Shorter Hawks 5-3.

The senior honorees for the Wolves were: Jacob Cotton, Andrew Killian, Robin Noren, Daniel Villalobos, Griggs Vinsant, Justin Wolfe, Uriel Zarracan and Jose Zuniga.

For the second game in a row, Zarracan got the Wolves off and running early, scoring a goal just 2:48 into the matchup off a feed from Seraphin Guetan.

After Shorter responded in the 14th minute with a goal, Ethan Orozco found the back of the net to the top right just two minutes later to put the Wolves back up by one.

The Hawks evened it up again at two apiece in the 36th minute as the teams went into the half all knotted up.

Joseph Friederich registered the first shot of the second half for Newberry before Ferran Macian was able to get one past the keeper in the 59th minute for his first of two goals on the night – the goals were Macian's first of the season.

Shorter, though, made it 3-all in the 65th minute in the back-and-forth affair before Macian struck again a minute later to put the Wolves on top for good.

Sophomore Alex Lopez capped the scoring in the 71st minute after Jose Puente found him in close. The goal was Lopez' first as a member of the Wolves.

In all, Newberry had 11 shots on net. Goalkeepers Cotton and Killian played the first and second half, respectively, as Cotton made five saves on seven shots faced and Killian saved four of five.

The Wolves return to the Smith Road Complex on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 14) for a match against Tusculum that begins at 3:30.
