Wolves Look to Start the New Year Strong Against King

Newberry v. King

Newberry, S.C. | Eleazar Arena

Livestats

Scouting the Tornado: King will enter the dual with a 5-6 record after previously being defeated in their last dual match against #6 Pitts-Johnson on December 3, 2022, by a score of 12-37. Their last time in action saw them finish 35th out of 43 teams at the 43rd Midwest Classic in Indiana, the same event that Newberry would take part in as well. Coached by Nick Goebel, one to watch for the Tornado is redshirt sophomore Trent Mahoney in the 157 lb. weight class. Boasting a 17-3 season record and a 9-2 dual record, he has nine pins on the year (which leads the team) along with the fastest pin at 32 seconds.

Scouting the Wolves: The Wolves will be back in dual action with a 2-1 record after partaking in the same Midwest Classic as King that saw Newberry finish 29th out of 43 teams. Their last dual action came in a defeat to UNC Pembroke back on November 29, 2022, by a score of 9-30. Key wrestlers to watch for the Wolves are Devan Moore (Baxely, Ga.) and Dayton Fields (Seneca, Mo.), who wrestle at 149 lbs and 174 lbs, respectively. In the last action for Newberry Wolves Wrestling (Midwest Classic), Moore and Fields would finish in the top 12 of their respective weight classes, including both scoring upset victories. The first would find Moore upsetting #17 Tommy Nichols of American International in his second match, and Fields would upset #12 Hunter Haven of Limestone in what would lead to his third victory of the invitational.
