GAFFNEY, S.C. — The Wolves traveled to nearby Gaffney for their third straight South Atlantic Conference matchup, this time against the Saints from Limestone. Coach Justin Cook looked to gain some momentum in conference play by defeating a team that, in their previous match, defeated the then number six team in the country, Lenoir-Rhyne. The Wolves would have momentum in their own right, as they defeated Emory & Henry on the road by a score of 6-1 in their last match. Both teams looked to gain the upper hand on the other in conference play.
The first half kicked off with a bang, but unfortunately it would be for the opposition as Limestone would score a header within the first four minutes of play to put the Saints up one early. Limestone would then apply more pressure on the attack, and it would pay off eventually as a second Saints goal would be scored before the 12th minute.
The Wolves would try their best to muster up an attack to threaten the score sheet, but the Saints' defense would be tough to crack as Newberry would not have a shot on goal in the first half. Right before the half, Limestone would score again before the 43rd minute to put them up three; Newberry needing to complete a comeback in the second half.
The Wolves kicked off the second half in need to find a spark on offense to begin a sizable comeback, but also they would need to still abide by a plan to not become undone in defense as well. The call would first be answered by sophomore winger
Ferran Macian (Valencia, Spain) as his goal at the 50 minute would pull one back for the Wolves and spark the comeback. Play would continue on during the match, and neither side could gain an advantage, with Newberry exchanging four shots during the next 20 minutes.
Limestone would tack on another goal to put the lead back up to three. The Saints would go on to dominate most of the position for the next 10 minutes, as the Wolves would again not be able to get a shot. Junior centerback
Harry McDonnell (Reading, England) would change that as his goal would cut the lead for Limestone back to two. A red card by senior midfielder
Nestor Nunez (Madrid, Spain) would unfortunately all but decide the night for the Wolves as they would be defeated 2-4.
The Wolves will look to get a result this Saturday at Smith Road Complex at 3:00 PM as they take on the Railsplitters from Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference play.
