HICKORY, N.C. - The Newberry College Wolves women's lacrosse team (11-8, 5-7 SAC) fell to the Wingate Bulldogs in a hard-fought South Atlantic Conference semifinal matchup by a final score of 15-10.
The Bulldogs got on the board first, but Marissa Plumer (Chester, Md.) was able to respond a few minutes later. However, Wingate was able to go on a three goal run to take a 4-1 lead, but the Wolves were able to answer again as Plumer scored back-to-back goals for the early hat trick to cut the deficit to one. The Bulldogs tacked on two more to push their lead back out to three, but Heather Johnston (Merritt Island, Fla.) drew and converted on a free-position with 18 seconds left in the period to end a high-scoring first quarter of action.
The Bulldogs would strike first in the second quarter, but Chloe Wood (Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada) was able to find Robin Hall (Rockledge, Fla.) for the answer. The defenses began to step up as both teams had trouble finding the back of the net, but Wingate was able to add one more goal late in the half to send the Wolves into the break trailing 5-8.
The Wolves came out swinging in the third period with a pair of goals in quick succession. Plumer capitalized on a Bulldog miscue by quickly getting the ball up to the South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year, Cassell Richardson (Forest, Va.), and Wood would then take the ensuing draw control and head straight for the goal. After forcing multiple turnovers as well as a few nice saves from Mack Dorr (Riverhead, N.Y.), Wingate was able to strike back with another goal to pull ahead by two, but Newberry was once again there with the answer as Richardson found Plumer for her second goal of the afternoon. However, Wingate was able to take back the momentum and use a four-goal run to pull ahead by five going into the fourth quarter.
Wood came alive in the fourth quarter with a pair of goals to keep the Wolves in it, but it would not be enough as the Bulldogs were able to hold on.
Wood and Plumer led the way on offense with each notching a hat trick and an assist. Wood also led the team in draw controls with 7 while Plumer added 4 ground balls. Defensively, Kaitlyn Mason (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) led all players with 5 ground balls, and Madalyn Messersmith (Stevensville, Md.) led all players with an impressive 5 caused turnovers.
The Wolves end the season as the winningest team in program history as well as boasting the program's only postseason victory.
