Wolves End Season With Senior Day Split With Tusculum

33 Wins Ties Most Since 2007

Newberry, S.C. - The Newberry Softball Team entered the last day of the regular season having to win two games to secure a spot in the upcoming SAC Tournament but could get in with just one with some help. However, after a clutch grand slam in game one to get the Wolves one step closer to the postseason, Newberry could not overcome an early hot start by the Pioneers in game two as they would fall in game two. Unfortunately, the Wolves did not get the help needed in other games and saw their season end with a 33-17 record and a 12-12 conference record. The 33 wins are tied for the most wins under Ciria Triplett's tenure and also tied for the most since the then Newberry Indians won 34 games in 2002 and 2007.

Game One: Newberry 5, Tusculum 3
Both teams would find themselves in a pitchers duel as Alexandrea Sullivan and Emily Sappington would each get through the first four innings fairly easily. Sullivan would not allow a hit until the fifth inning where the Pioneers would get on the board with a sacrifice fly to capitalize off of a leadoff double but after the Pioneers would get another baserunner, Sullivan would keep the deficit at one heading to the bottom half of the inning.

Newberry would respond in a big way in the bottom half of the inning as Tedi Nunn would reach with a single to lead off the inning. Vanessa Wilson would move Nunn over and reach on an error to put two runners on with one out. Mallena Wright would tie the game with an RBI single to score Nunn which was followed by a perfectly placed bunt by Amber Dalfonso that died inches from the front of the plate where the Pioneers could make no play and the bases were loaded for Sierra Brogdon. Brogdon would produce what may be the biggest hit of the Wolves' season up to that point as she would deposit a 1-0 pitch over the right center field wall for a grand slam to give the Wolves a 5-1 lead.

The Pioneers would not go away quietly, they would make Sullivan work and would draw three walks to load the bases and after a two RBI double to make it 5-3, Sullivan's afternoon was done as she gave way to Brittany Crowson, who was honored alongside fellow seniors Victoria Eaton and Hannah Towery. Crowson would only need to throw one pitch to get out of the inning as the Pioneers would get a little too greedy on the basepaths and the Wolves would catch the runner coming home to hold the two run lead.

After the Wolves were held scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, Crowson returned to the circle to try to complete the save. The Pioneers would get two runners on but that is as far as they would get as Crowson would shut the door to give the Wolves the game one win.

Game Two: Tusculum 7, Newberry 2
The Pioneers would strike early with three runs against Crowson in the top of the first and would tack on another in the top of the third to make it 4-0. The Wolves would respond in the bottom of the inning as run-scoring hits from Amber Dalfonso and Sierra Brogdon would cut the lead in half. However, that would be as close as Newberry would get as the Pioneers would score the next three runs and quell multiple Newberry rallies with some great defensive plays to break Newberry's hearts and end their season.
