Wolves Fall Twice to Trojans

Newberry Hosts Catawba Next Saturday

Anderson, S.C. - After sweeping Mars Hill on Wednesday, the Newberry Softball Team looked to continue the momentum as they headed to Anderson to face a Trojans team who, up until the most recent rankings, had been ranked in the NFCA poll. The Wolves would struggle offensively in game one, only getting three base runners in a run rule loss and then would enter the seventh inning with a chance to secure a split but two home runs would break the Wolves' hearts.

Game One: Anderson 10, Newberry 0 (F/5)
Anderson would strike first with one run in the first inning but the Wolves were able to keep the Trojan lineup at bay after that. However, the Wolves could only manage two hits in game one as they were held scoreless for only the second time this season. Anderson would pull away with five runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to come away with the five inning victory.

Game Two: Anderson 5, Newberry 3
The Wolves would start to get some offense going early in game two as Emily Hughes would steal two bases after reaching on a fielder's choice and would be brought home by a Sierra Brogdon RBI groundout to give the Scarlet and Gray a 1-0 lead after their first at bat. However, Anderson would respond in the bottom half of the inning with a home run but Ally Sullivan would shut the door for that inning.

Both pitchers would put up zeros until the fifth inning when Newberry would get back in front with two runs coming from RBI hits from Vanessa Wilson and Emily Hughes to make it 3-1. The Trojans would hit another home run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-2 and would threaten with more as they would get runners on the corners with only one out but Sullivan would not be phased as she would retire the next two batters to preserve the lead.

Newberry would get Vanessa Wilson into scoring position with a double in the top of the seventh but couldn't bring her home. Down to their last three outs, the Trojans would lead off the bottom of the seventh with another solo home run to tie the game and then would follow with a two run home run four batters later to secure the sweep.

The Wolves will have the full week off this coming week and will prepare to welcome the Catawba Indians to the Smith Road Complex next Saturday for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 PM.
