Wolves Sweep Catawba Behind Brown’s Five RBI and Stellar Relief Pitching

Crowson and Berg Allow No Runs In Relief

Newberry, S.C. - After falling twice to Anderson last Saturday, the Newberry Softball Team got back to winning ways as they took down the Catawba Indians in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader on a blustery Saturday at the Smith Road Complex. The wins moved the Wolves to 30-12 on the year and 11-7 in SAC play. This marks the first time that Newberry has won at least thirty games since the 2018 season and the fourth time under head coach Ciria Triplett.

Game One: Newberry 8, Catawba 2
The Indians would strike first with an unearned run in the first and an RBI single in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Catawba was very patient with their at-bats and made Lindsey Foster work to get them out. However, Newberry would capitalize off several Catawba errors and plate three unearned runs from a sacrifice fly from Mady Brown, an RBI single from Tori Rose, and Tedi Nunn would score on a throwing error as the Indians would try to double a runner off on a Vanessa Wilson lineout to make it 3-2 after two innings.

Those two early runs would be all the offense Catawba would get as Brittany Crowson entered the game in the third and proceeded to slam the door shut on the Indians' lineup as she would strike out eight batters in five innings of work en route to her fifth win of the season.

Newberry would plate three more runs in the fifth as Sierra Brogdon and Hannah Towery would each record RBI singles and Mady Brown would bring a run home on a fielding error by Catawba. The Wolves would get two more in the sixth off of a double steal brought Amber Dalfonso home and an RBI single from Sierra Brogdon brought home Emily Hughes to give the game the final scoreline of 8-2 after Crowson struck out the side in the seventh.

Game Two: Newberry 9, Catawba 5
Catawba would once again take an early lead in the first but the Wolves would respond with a flurry of runs in the bottom half of the inning as they would send nine batters to the plate and score five runs. Mady Brown would bring home two with a single and then Tedi Nunn and Emily Hughes would each record RBI doubles with Nunn's bringing home two and Hughes' bringing home one to make it an early 5-1 Newberry lead.

However, the Indians continued to prove to be tough outs as they would record three different hits with two strikes, including a two RBI double that capped a four run inning to tie the game at five.

However, as with game one, the Newberry bullpen would come in and shut the door for the Catawba offense the rest of the way as Abby Berg would come in for the last five innings and would only face three batters over the minimum while putting zeros on the scoreboard the rest of the way.

The Scarlet and Gray would take the lead back in the third as they would load the bases with no one out and Tedi Nunn would bring home a run with a walk and Emily Hughes would plate another with an RBI fielder's choice to give Newberry a 7-5 lead. The Wolves would plate two more in the fourth as Brown would record her fifth RBI of the day with an RBI single to score Hannah Towery and Tedi Nunn would cap the scoring with an RBI groundout to make it 9-5. Berg would retire eight of the next ten batters to secure her first win of the season.

The Wolves return to midweek action this Tuesday as they will host Coker for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3 PM. The Wolves will then hit the road for the final time as they travel to Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday for a crucial conference doubleheader with the rival Bears.
