Wolves Drop Final Home Game 9-4 to Lander

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Closing out the home portion of their 2022 campaign, the Newberry College (34-11) baseball team was unable to provide the home crowd with a victory as they dropped the 9-4 decision to the Bearcats of Lander University on Tuesday, April 19.

Sophomore Henry Gibson (Walterboro, S.C.) and senior Beau Thompson (Pickens, S.C.) recorded the three RBIs for the Wolves on the evening while Gibson notching two and Thompson adding one.  The Wolves would use eight different arms in the contest with half of them not allowing a run in the contest.

Lander was able to jump out the lead in the top of the second inning with a single run, but the Wolves were able to respond with a run of their own in the bottom half. After loading the bases through a walk and a pair of singles, Newberry was able to trade two outs for a run and pull back even with the Bearcats.

Newberry would get a runner over to third in the bottom of the third but would be unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Lander took that crack in the door and busted it wide open in the fourth as they were able to post six runs in the top of the frame to take the 7-1 advantage. The Scarlet and Gray would look to start chipping into that lead in the bottom of the fifth as they were able to post a pair of runs and pull back to within four. A pair of singles by Gibson and Thompson in the inning, plated the runs for Newberry.

The Bearcats were able to add a pair of runs to their tally in the top of the eighth inning after the Wolves were able to post on in the bottom of the seventh and that 9-4 advantage for Lander would be where the contest would end.

Newberry returns to action this weekend as they make the trip to Hartsville, S.C. to take on the Cobras of Coker University.  First pitch for the Friday opener is set for 3:00 p.m.

Prior to tonight's game, the Newberry College baseball team honored the memory of Dusty Triplett, Jerry Coffey and Bo Coffey.  Their names were added to the third base fence as a permanent recognition for their friendship and support of Newberry College.
