Newberry, S.C - After sweeping Catawba over the weekend, the Newberry Softball Team returned to the Smith Road Complex to host the Coker Cobras and would strike first in both games but couldn't find the hits to add to the lead as the Cobras would take the lead back and hold on in both games to hand the Wolves their first home sweep since Lincoln Memorial last season.
Game One: Coker 6, Newberry 4
Newberry would get three quick runs in the first inning as Mallena Wright would single to lead off the game and Emily Hughes would draw a walk to bring up Sierra Brogdon. The sophomore from Leesburg, Ga. would deposit a ball right to the left of the scoreboard for her fourth home run of the season to give the Wolves an early 3-0 lead.
However, the Cobras would respond with the next six runs as they would get one in the second, three in the third and two in the sixth. The two runs in the sixth would cut deeper as they would all come with two outs and would all come from soft contact hits that would find green grass in left field.
The Wolves would battle in the seventh getting the first two runners on in Tedi Nunn and Hailey Hill and Nunn would end up scoring on a fielding error to cut into the lead but that is all the Wolves would get as Coker would take game one.
Game Two: Coker 8, Newberry 6
Game two would start the exact same way as game one would, except this time it was Hannah Towery's turn to deliver the three run home run as it got caught in a gust of wind and found its way just to the other side of the center field fence to give Newberry another 3-0 first inning lead.
However, Coker would respond with six runs in the third, all of them coming with two outs and three of them coming off of a three-run home run to give the Cobras the lead at 6-3.
Newberry would get at least one runner on in every inning after the third and would slowly chip away in the lead as
Tedi Nunn would score on a wild pitch to make it 6-4 and
Mallena Wright would deliver an RBI double to make it 6-5. However, the Cobras would add two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to make it 8-5 and they would prove big as
Sierra Brogdon would lead off the final frame with a blast to dead center field that would've tied the game if not for those runs.
Hannah Towery would single but that is all the offense the Wolves would get in the seventh as Coker closed the game on a diving play by the pitcher to field a grounder and throw to first to secure the sweep.
Up Next:
The Wolves will look to bounce back quickly as they head to Hickory, N.C. on Good Friday to take on the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne in a big South Atlantic Conference twin-bill. This is the final road trip of the Wolves season as they will return to the Smith Road Complex for the final two matchups: a non-conference set with Claflin and the regular season finale against Tusculum.
