Two Complete Team Performances Leads Wolves to Perfect 4-0 Weekend

Two Conference Doubleheaders Coming This Week

Newberry, S.C. - After two hard fought wins on day one of the last Newberry Round Robin of the season, the Newberry Softball Team used what was, according to Head Coach Ciria Triplett, "the most complete performances we had all season" to take down Davis and Elkins and hold off a furious comeback by the King Tornado to complete an undefeated weekend. The Scarlet and Gray now sit at 19-7 on the season as they head into the meat of SAC play starting this week.

Game One: Newberry 8, Davis and Elkins 2
The Wolves would strike first and strike hard as Hailey Hill would drive home the first five runs of the game. Hill would open the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI single through the middle to score Mallena Wright, who led off the inning with a single and stole her 14th base of the season, as well as Emily Hughes to give the Wolves the early 2-0 lead. Not satisfied with just two RBIs, Hill would add three more to her total as she would drive a 0-1 pitch into the cars parked behind the fence in left field to make it 5-0 after two innings.

After the flurry of runs to start the game for Newberry, things settled down as both pitchers would put up zeros until the bottom of the fifth where the Wolves would tack on one more as three straight singles by Lindsey Mitchell, Kasey Widmyer, and Tedi Nunn would load the bases for Vanessa Wilson would who drive home pinch runner Madison Truett to make it a 6-0 lead.

Brittany Crowson continued the trend of outstanding pitching by the Wolves over the weekend as she would throw up zeros through five and a third before letting up her only runs via a two run home run in the top of the sixth. However, the Wolves would pick their pitcher up as they would respond with two runs of their own as they would cash in a Hannah Towery walk and Lindsey Mitchell single on a Kasey Widmyer RBI double to make it 8-2.

Crowson would finish her second complete game of the season by working around two singles from the Senators in the seventh before getting a line out to Tedi Nunn to end the game and secure a winning weekend for the Scarlet and Gray.

Game Two: Newberry 6, King 5
After getting tangled up in a pitching duel in their Saturday matchup with the Tornado the Wolves turned the tide completely as they would put up a six spot in their first at bat. Mallena Wright would get hit by a pitch to start the inning and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Emily Hughes. However, the next four batters would reach base as Hailey Hill would walk and advance to second on a wild pitch that also moved Wright to third. That would be followed by RBI doubles from Hannah Towery and Mackenzie Turner that would give the Wolves a 3-0 lead. Sierra Brogdon joined the fun with an RBI single of her own to score Turner to make it 4-0. After a Tedi Nunn fly out, Vanessa Wilson capped the inning with a two run home run onto the berm behind the right field fence to make it 6-0 after the first inning of play.

However, the Wolves bats would be held in check the rest of the way but it wasn't from a lack of solid contact as Newberry would hit several balls hard that would find a Tornado glove.

Offensively, the Tornado would not go away quietly as they would put up four runs in the third to cut the lead to two but Lindsey Foster would bend but not break as she would keep King at arms length until the sixth where she was relieved by Alexandrea Sullivan. King would get another run in the sixth but Newberry would catch the potential tying run in a rundown and tag her out to end the Tornado threat in the sixth and keep the lead going into the last frame of action.

In the seventh, Rikkelle Miller, who tied the Saturday matchup in the seventh with a home run, would lead off with a single. The Tornado would pinch run for Miller as Sullivan would retire the next two batters. However, King would try to get a little too greedy on the basepaths as Mackenzie Turner would hook up with Tedi Nunn to catch the King pinch runner stealing and end the game and secure a perfect weekend for the Scarlet and Gray.

"I'm super proud of the girls for digging deep and being able to come out of this weekend 4-0 and head into conference play with some momentum," said Coach Triplett.

The Newberry Softball Team now heads into the heart of their conference schedule as they will face the Queens Royals in Charlotte, N.C. on Wednesday and then welcome the Wingate Bulldogs to the Smith Road Complex for the Wolves first conference home game of the season.
