Pitching, Long Ball Drive Wolves to Dominant Sweep of Queens

Turner Leads the Way With Five RBI

Charlotte, N.C. - The Newberry Softball Team got in the win column in conference play as they used a pair of great pitching performances from Kasey Widmyer and Alexandrea Sullivan as well as six home runs across the two games, including two from Mackenzie Turner to record their first sweep over the Queens Royals since 2017. The Wolves now sit at 21-7 overall on the season and 2-2 in SAC play.

Game One: Newberry 7, Queens 0
Both teams would be held off the scoreboard in the first inning but the Wolves would break the ice in the second inning as Hannah Towery and Vanessa Wilson would both be hit by a pitch to start it off and Towery would be brought home with a Tedi Nunn RBI single. Tori Rose would force a fielding error which brought home Wilson to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead after two.

Newberry would continue to add on in the third as Sierra Brogdon would start the rally with a double and would be brought home on a Hailey Hill RBI single. After an error on a fielder's choice by Towery forced Hill to second, a wild pitch would move everyone up 60 feet which would allow Hill to score on a Mackenzie Turner RBI single and Towery would score on another fielder's choice to make it a 5-0 lead after three.

The Wolves would get their next two runs from solo shots from Turner in the sixth and Kasey Widmyer in the seventh to make it 7-0.

Although the Wolves scored seven runs, one would've been sufficient as Widmyer was once again phenomenal in the circle as she recorded her eighth complete game and third shutout of the season. In those seven innings of work, Widmyer only allowed two hits and only walked two while striking out five and facing four batters over the minimum 21.

Game Two: Newberry 13, Queens 4
Newberry would strike first in the second game as Hailey Hill would hit a homer to center field to make it 1-0 to the Scarlet and Gray. However, the Royals would get their first runs of the game in the second inning on an error and RBI single to give them the 2-1 lead. Vanessa Wilson would give the Wolves the lead right back as she would join in on the home run party with a three-run shot of her own to give Newberry a lead they would not renege.

Queens would get a run back in the bottom of the third but the Wolves would pull away after that as in the fourth Emily Hughes would single and Hailey Hill would reach on an error that scored Hughes who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Towery would hit Newberry's fifth home run of the day to make it 7-3 and Mackenzie Turner would make it back to back with a solo shot of her own, her second of the day, to make it 8-3.

Queens would get their final run in the bottom of the fifth but a five run sixth which included a two RBI double from Turner and RBI singles from Lindsey Mitchell, Tedi Nunn, and Mallena Wright would put the game in run rule territory with a 13-4 lead for Newberry.

The Royals would get two on in the bottom of the sixth but Alexandrea Sullivan would shut Queens down to secure her seventh complete game of the season. Sullivan would only allow two earned runs while striking out seven in those six innings of work for the complete game.

The Scarlet and Gray will play their conference home opener on Saturday as they face the Wingate Bulldogs for a doubleheader scheduled for 1 and 3 PM at the Smith Road Complex.
