Pitching, Timely Offense Drives Wolves to Saturday Sweep of Tornado and Senators

Sullivan and Widmyer Each Strike Out Nine

Newberry, S.C. - After dropping their conference opener earlier this week against the Limestone Saints, the Newberry Softball Team returned to the friendly confines of the Smith Road Complex and opened their final round robin tournament of the season with two wins over King and Davis and Elkins on Saturday. The wins moved the Wolves to 17-7 overall on the season and 16-2 at home.

Game One: Newberry 4, Davis and Elkins 1
The Scarlet and Gray would strike first in their first at bat as Mallena Wright would lead off the game with a single and would advance to second when Hannah Towery was hit by a pitch. After a fielder's choice retired Towery, Wright would score on an RBI single off the bat of Hailey Hill to give the Wolves the early 1-0 lead.

After retiring the first six batters of the game, striking out five of them, Alexandrea Sullivan would have her first bit of trouble in the circle in the top of the third as the Senators would lead off the inning with a double which would come home to score on an RBI single to tie the score at one. However, Sullivan would retire the next two batters to keep the damage to a minimum and the Wolves would return the favor in the bottom half of the inning as an Emily Hughes RBI double would score Sierra Brogdon and Hannah Towery, both of whom reached via walk, to give Newberry a 3-1 lead.

That would be all the offense that Sullivan would need as she would silence the Senator bats for the rest of the game, facing only two over the minimum after the third inning. She would finish her sixth complete game only allowing three hits, and one walk while striking out nine and facing only 25 batters.

The Wolves would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Mady Brown would bring home Reagan Smith to give the game the final scoreline of 4-1.

Game Two: Newberry 2, King 1 (F/8)
The second game of the day would feature an even stiffer pitching duel as Kasey Widmyer and King's Nikole Counts would retire the sides in order the first two innings and each pitch the first three innings scoreless.

However, the Tornado would strike first with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth but Widmyer would limit the damage to just that. Newberry would respond in kind in the bottom half of the inning after back to back singles by Sierra Brogdon and Hailey Hill, Hannah Towery would bring home Amber Dalfonso, who pinch ran for Brogdon, to tie the game at one.

The game would stay there until the bottom of the sixth as Mallena Wright would lead off the inning with a single and then steal second. After a dropped third strike allowed Sierra Brogdon to get on base and Wright to advance to third, Hailey Hill would deliver a sacrifice fly to give the Wolves the late lead at 2-1. However, the Tornado would not go away quietly as they would respond with a one out homer in the top of the seventh to tie the game. The Wolves would have a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh after a Widmyer two out walk followed by a double for Mallena Wright to put runners at second and third but King would get Brogdon to pop out to send the game to extra innings.

With the international tiebreaker in effect, King would open the eighth with a runner in scoring position and would use two walks to load the bases with only one out. With her pitch count getting high, Widmyer would dig deep and retire the next two batters via fielder's choice and pop out to keep the Tornado off the board in the inning and give the Wolves a prime opportunity to walk it off.

Newberry would pinch run Emily Hughes for Brogdon at second base and would advance Hughes with a Hailey Hill sacrifice bunt. Hannah Towery would walk and then in the middle of Mackenzie Turner's at-bat, bait a throwdown to second as King tried to cut the throw off to get the Hughes going home, the throw would sail high and Hughes would score without a play to give Newberry the hard fought 2-1 win, their first extra innings win of the season.

The Scarlet and Gray return to action on Sunday as they will wrap the main portion of their non-conference slate as they will face Davis and Elkins at 1 PM and King at 3 PM.
