Thompson's Two-RBI Day Lifts No. 11 Wolves to Season Sweep of Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Looking to bounce back from their rough weekend and complete the series sweep of Augusta on the year, the Newberry College (27-6) baseball team did just that as they were able to pick up the 8-3 win over the Jags on the road on Tuesday, March 29.

Freshman Parker Fenton (Minneola, Fla.) provided the start of the bullpen day for the Wolves as he went three strong innings keeping the Jags off the board over that stretch while picking up the win.  Overall, the Scarlet and Gray put seven pitchers on the mound in the contest with only a pair letting up a single earned run.

Junior Braylin Marine (Freeport, N.Y.) returned to early season form as he posted four hits on the day recording one RBI.  Senior Beau Thompson (Pickens, S.C.) notched a pair of RBIs while freshman Jomar Lugo (San Sebastian, P.R.), Ben Freeman (Easley, S.C.) and Jacob LeBron (Lexington, S.C.) each recorded one on the night as well.

After being retired in order in the top half of the first, the Wolves went on a hitting streak of three that brought around two of the three runs that they would score in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Henry Gibson (Walterboro, S.C.) kicked the inning off with a single deep in the infield that put the first runner on. He would be knocked in by Thompson on the next batter as he drove a double to center field that brought around the first run of the day.  Thompson wouldn't spend long on the base paths either as Freeman would notch his RBI with a double to center field as well that brought in another run.

A sacrifice bunt and a hard ground out in the next two at-bats would bring around the third run of the frame for the Scarlet and Gray and give them the 3-0 lead. The Wolves forced the Jags to the bullpen to open the third inning, but it wouldn't change the game as the defensive would have as the Wolves scored another run in the third off a wild pitch to extend their lead to 4-0.

Another pitching change for the Jags would lead to more runs for the Wolves in the top of the fourth as they would work around the new hurler to plate two more runs.  A pair of singles, one to the outfield and one on the infield dirt brought around those runs and gave Newberry the 6-0 lead. Augusta was finally able to scratch a pair of runs across in the bottom of the frame, but the Wolves continued to lead by four at the conclusion.

Both teams would go silent offensively until the top of the seventh when the Wolves were able to add another run to their tally as the Jags pitcher would balk a run to the plate.  Augusta answered with a single run of their own in the bottom of the eighth, but Newberry brought the margin back out to five with Thompson's second RBI of the day in the top of the ninth to wrap up the 8-3 victory.

The Wolves will have a quick turnaround as they make the trip back to Georgia tomorrow, March 30 to take on the Bobcats of Georgia College.  First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
