Wolves Drop Pair of Games to 19th-Ranked Railsplitters

Face 18th-Ranked Eagles at Home Next Week

Harrogate, Tenn. - After splitting with UVA-Wise in the midweek, the Newberry Softball Team entered what might be their hardest stretch of their schedule as they opened a stretch of three ranked opponents of the next four matchups with a trip to #19 Lincoln Memorial to face the defending SAC Regular Season Champions. The Wolves would battle hard in game one but a two-out walk off home run would give the Wolves their second straight heartbreak defeat. However, in game two, the Railsplitters would score five runs in the first inning and not look back as they went on to a run rule victory. The Wolves now fall to 24-10 overall and 5-5 in SAC Play.

Game One: #19 Lincoln Memorial 4, Newberry 2
The Railsplitters would strike first as they would cash in two walks with an RBI single to take a 1-0 after the first inning. But the Wolves would not be intimidated as Mackenzie Turner continued her torrent pace with a lead off home run in the second inning to tie the game at one a piece.

Both teams would be held scoreless until Lincoln Memorial would strike again in the fourth as they would cash in a leadoff double to make it 2-1. But the Wolves would respond again in the sixth as Hannah Towery would launch a two-out home run to right center to tie the score heading into the final frame. In the top of the seventh, Newberry would get two on with two outs but couldn't cash in. In the bottom half, Kasey Widmyer would get two quick outs but would walk the third batter and then on a 3-2 count would give up a walk off home run to give the Railsplitters the game one victory.

Game Two: #19 Lincoln Memorial 8, Newberry 0 (F/5)
Lincoln Memorial would not let the Wolves hang around for long in game two as they would score eight runs in the first three innings, highlighted by a five run first inning, to pull away early. The Wolves couldn't ever get a rhythm going offensively as they would get one baserunner on in each inning but couldn't cash in as they would be held scoreless for the first time all season.

The Wolves now will have a full week off after playing at least twice a week since the beginning of the season before they face their second straight ranked opponent in a row as they welcome the #18 Carson-Newman Eagles to the Smith Road Complex next Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1 and 3 PM.
