Wolves Grind Out Sweep of No. 18 Eagles

First Sweep of Ranked Opponent in Triplett Era

Newberry, S.C. - For the first time under head coach Ciria Triplett, the Newberry Softball Team took both games of a doubleheader from a ranked opponent as they swept the 18th-ranked Carson-Newman Eagles on a windy day at the Smith Road Complex. This marks the fifth consecutive season, 2020 season excluded, that the Wolves have taken at least one game from a ranked opponent during the duration of the season. With the wins, the Wolves improved to 26-10 overall and 7-5 in SAC play.

Game One: Newberry 8, No. 18 Carson-Newman 4
Newberry would break the ice in the bottom of the first via a Hannah Towery sacrifice fly that scored Mallena Wright who led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third with a groundout and wild pitch.

The Wolves would hold the 1-0 lead until the fourth as Lindsey Foster would hold the SAC's best offense at bay until a solo shot in the top of the fourth would bring the game back to one a piece. However, the Wolves would respond right back in the bottom of the fourth by scoring four runs, all with two outs. Tori Rose would bring home two runs with a single and Vanessa Wilson would cap the inning with a homer to dead center field that caught the wind high up in the air and carried it over the fence to give the Scarlet and Gray a 5-1 lead after four.

However, Newberry was not done there as they would continue to tack on in the bottom of the fifth with a Hannah Towery RBI single. They would then add two more in the bottom of the sixth with a Sierra Brogdon two-RBi single to put the 18th-ranked team in the country in danger of being run-ruled with the winning run on second base, only one out, and a seven run lead at 8-1. However, the Eagles would get the next two batters and send the game to the seventh.

The Eagles would not go quietly in the seventh as they would load the bases and end up plating three runs to make it 8-4 and have the tying run at the plate but Lindsey Foster was able to get Carmen Holt to ground out to secure the upset win.

Game Two: Newberry 5, No. 18 Carson-Newman 4:
Newberry would once again strike early as Hannah Towery would bring home Wright once again with an RBI double and Mackenzie Turner added her team leading seventh home run of the season to give the Wolves an early 3-0 lead. The Scarlet and Gray would add two more in the bottom of the third as Sierra Brogdon would ground into a weird fielder's choice that scored Mallena Wright. However, that play saw multiple run downs and Brogdon ended up at third base without the ball leaving the infield or an error occurring. After a Towery groundout, Mackenzie Turner would add her third RBI of the game on a single to make it 5-0 after three. However those would be the last runs the Wolves would score.

Once again the Eagles would not go quietly as they would finally start to time up Brittany Crowson after she had gotten through the first three innings fairly easily. Carson-Newman would score one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one more in the sixth to make it a one run ballgame. However, Coach Triplett trusted her pitcher in each of those situations and Crowson was able to escape a bases loaded jam in the sixth only allowing one run to score.

Ally Sullivan would come in for the seventh looking for her second save of the season, and would find herself in a sticky situation as the Eagles were timing her up as well with several hard hit balls, one of which a double that looked as if it cleared the left center field fence. However, Sullivan was not phased as she would get a deep fly out to Mallena Wright to secure the sweep and Newberry's fourth consecutive win over the Eagles.

The Wolves will travel to the mountains of North Carolina to Mars Hill on Wednesday as they will face the Mountain Lions for a doubleheader starting at 1 PM. Newberry's next home game is Saturday, April 9th as they will face the Catawba Indians.
