Wolves Use Offensive Outburst to Split With UVA-Wise

Eight Inning Home Run Prevents Sweep

Newberry, S.C. - The Newberry Softball team used a five run first inning and never looked back as they defeated the UVA-Wise Cavaliers 11-0 in game one of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader. However, in game two, despite clutch hitting from Sierra Brogdon and great defensive plays from Mallena Wright and Vanessa Wilson, an eighth inning three-run home run proved to be the difference as the Cavaliers escaped the Smith Road Complex with a split. The Wolves now sit at 24-8 overall and 5-3 in SAC play and are currently fifth in the conference standings.

Game One: Newberry 11, Virginia-Wise 0 (F/5)
The Wolves would get off to a hot start in game one and never look back as they would put up five runs in the first and second innings. Sierra Brogdon would score on an error, Vanessa Wilson would add two more via an RBI Single, Tedi Nunn would add another RBI single of her own, and Tori Rose concluded the first inning scoring with an RBI groundout to give the Wolves a comfortable 5-0 lead after one.

The Scarlet and Gray would repeat the feat in the second inning as they would get runs from an Hailey Hill RBI single and a Mackenzie Turner, who was named SAC Player of the Week shortly before the game, two-RBI double to make it 8-0. The final two runs of the inning would come from Turner scoring on an error and Vanessa Wilson scoring from a Kasey Widmyer sacrifice fly. Tori Rose would add the 11th and final run in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single.

Although the Wolves scored 11, Kasey Widmyer only needed one as she lived up to being named SAC Pitcher of the Week with a five inning complete game, her fifth, where she only gave up two hits, walked none, and faced only one batter more than the minimum 15.

Game Two: Virginia-Wise 6, Newberry 4 (F/8)
Game two would turn out to be a much closer battle than game one. Just as they did in game one, the Wolves would strike first as Sierra Brogdon would blast a third inning solo shot, her second career home run, onto the berm in right center field to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

Sullivan would hold the Cavaliers at bay for the first four innings. However, she would run into trouble in the fourth as the Cavaliers would get two on with one out but an outfield assist from Mallena Wright would gun the potential tying run out at the plate to preserve the Wolves lead.

But Wise would get their first runs of the afternoon via a solo home run in the top of the fifth. However, the Wolves would respond right back as Emily Hughes would single and advance to second when the ball took a bad hop and would advance to third on a Mallena Wright ground out. That would bring up Brodgon again who, just as she did in the third, would give the Wolves the lead as she would bring Hughes home with an RBI single.

Wise would strike right back in the top of the sixth as they would plate a run via an error and would try to take the lead via a sacrifice fly but Vanessa Wilson would have other plans as she would record the second outfield assist of the game keeping the game tied at two.

The Cavaliers would take the lead in the top of the seventh with a solo home run but would be held there. The Wolves would not go away quietly as they would load the bases with no one out for Brogdon who would rope a ball to center field that seemed destined to at least bounce off the fence, if not go over it. However, it would be brought in for the first out, but it would do a job as Tori Rose would score on the deep fly ball to give Brogdon her third RBI of the game. Hailey Hill would follow with a ball that seemed destined to drop and score Emily Hughes but a great read by the center fielder prevented that from happening and keep the game tied and after a Hannah Towery strikeout, we headed to extra innings.

Wise would make a statement in the top of the eighth as they would put three across with a three run home run, ending Sullivan's outing. Lindsey Foster came in and retired the next three batters but Newberry had their word cut out for them heading to the bottom half of the extra frame. Hannah Towery would be the runner placed on second base for the international tiebreaker and would score, but at the expense of two precious outs. The Cavaliers would get Tedi Nunn to pop out to secure the split.

The Wolves turn their attention now to Saturday as they will travel to Harrogate, Tenn. to take on the 19th ranked Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters, last year's SAC Regular Season Champions. This marks a run of three ranked opponents of the next four for the Wolves as they will welcome the currently 18th ranked Carson-Newman Eagles to the Smith Road Complex on March 26th. Then after a road trip to Mars Hill, will travel to the currently 22nd ranked Anderson Trojans on April 2nd.
