Long Ball, Late Game Two Heroics Propel Wolves to Sweep Over North Greenville

Mallena Wright Leads Wolves With Five Hits

Newberry, S.C. - After averaging 11 runs a game in their four games over the weekend, the Newberry Softball Team continued their torrid offensive pace as they scored 18 runs in 9-4 win and a comeback 9-6 win over the North Greenville Crusaders at the Smith Road Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The wins give the Wolves their best start to a season since 2016 where they started 9-0.

Game One: Newberry 9, North Greenville 4

In game one, the Wolves used the long ball to pull away from the Crusaders as Lindsey Mitchell homered twice and Hannah Towery and Kasey Widmyer also went deep to give the Wolves the 9-4 win.

Lindsey Mitchell opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after Kasey Widmyer worked around two base runners in the top of the first. Mallena Wright ripped a single on the third pitch of the inning and was moved to second on a Tori Rose sacrifice bunt to bring up Mitchell. Mitchell then proceeded to take the sixth pitch of the at-bat beyond the center field fence to give Newberry a 2-0 lead three batters in. Not to be outdone, Hannah Towery went yard on the sixth pitch of the very next at-bat, and the Scarlet and Gray had a 3-0 lead after the first inning.

The Wolves would threaten again in the second as they would get two on with a Mallena Wright double and Tori Rose reaching on a fielder's choice but an outstanding diving catch by North Greenville's Lexis Wilkinson in center field kept the Wolves off the board.

North Greenville would get on the board in the top of the third with a walk, triple, and a sacrifice fly to cut the Newberry lead to 3-2. The Wolves would get a runner on in the bottom half but a sharp line drive out would turn into a double play to end the Newberry threat.

Kasey Widmyer would bounce back in the circle and send the Crusaders down in order on just eight pitches. But the junior from Spartanburg wasn't done after she completed her time in the circle in the fourth as she would step to the plate with one out in the bottom half and send a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to give the Wolves some breathing room at 4-2. Widmyer has homered in every single game in which she has started in the circle this season.

However, the Crusaders would bounce right back as they would tie the game as they would take advantage of a Newberry error to plate two to tie the game up at four. But the Scarlet and Gray would get their two run lead back in the bottom half as they would load the bases with one out where Emily Hughes would hit a single that couldn't be corralled by the shortstop, scoring Towery to give Newberry the lead back. Kasey Widmyer would help her own cause once again as she would hit a sacrifice fly to increase the lead back to two at 6-4.

Widmyer would work around a two-out walk in the top of the sixth and the Wolves would pull away for good in the bottom half as Tori Rose would open the inning with a single and Lindsey Mitchell would bring her home on her second home run of the game to give the Wolves a 8-4 lead. After a Hannah Towery walk, Sierra Brogdon single, and a Tedi Nunn single, Emma Price would score the final run of the game on a pass ball after pinch running for Towery to give the Wolves the 9-4 lead that would be the final scoreline after Widmyer would send the Crusaders down in order in the top of the seventh to secure her third win in the circle and the Wolves fifth win of the season.

Game Two: Newberry 9, North Greenville 6
Game two would start out a little less smoothly than the first game did for the Scarlet and Gray as the Crusaders would get two early runs off of Alexandrea Sullivan in the first with an RBI single and sacrifice fly. The Wolves bats were held silent in the bottom half and Sullivan responded in kind by working around a one out walk thanks to Hannah Towery throwing Makayla Brackett out at second base to end the inning.

Newberry would get a run back in the bottom of the second after Hailey Hill got to second base via a North Greenville error and was brought up with a Tedi Nunn RBI single to cut the Crusader lead to 2-1. Sullivan would work a 1-2-3 top half of the third and the Wolves would respond by tying the game thanks to a Lindsey Mitchell RBI single that scored Mallena Wright and the game was tied at two after three innings.

North Greenville would take the lead right back with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth but Sullivan would work the rest of the inning without further damage. However, the Wolves were held at bat in the bottom half of the fourth and the Crusaders would score three in the top of the fifth by taking advantage of a Newberry error with an RBI single, bases loaded walk, and sacrifice fly to increase their lead to 6-2.

But the Wolves weren't going to let their perfect start go away easily as they would respond right back in the bottom of the fifth with four runs. Mallena Wright laced a first pitch single up the middle and Tori Rose would reach on an error but would be erased on a Lindsey Mitchell fielder's choice but it wouldn't matter as Hannah Towery would rip a double to right center field that scored both Wright and Mitchell to cut the North Greenville lead to two at 6-4. Sierra Brogdon would advance Towery to third leading to her scoring on a Tedi Nunn RBI groundout. Reagan Smith would pinch hit for Christine Butler and would lace an RBI double scoring Brogdon and bringing the Wolves all the way back from down four to start the inning. Suddenly it was a brand new ballgame at 6-6 heading to the last two innings.

Lindsey Foster would relieve Sullivan in the Circle and work around a leadoff single to keep the game tied and the Wolves would take the lead in the bottom of the sixth with another Mallena Wright leadoff hit coming around to score on a Hannah Towery RBI triple scoring both Wright and Lindsey Mitchell who reached on a single as well. After a Brogdon groundout, Tedi Nunn would score Towery with an RBI single of her own and the Wolves had now scored seven unanswered runs to take a 9-6 lead heading to the last frame of action. Lindsey Foster would make short work of the Crusaders in the seventh to seal the comeback win and the 6-0 start for the Wolves.

The Newberry Softball Team now looks forward to a trip down south to Saint Augustine, Fla. to take part in the Old Coast Classic as they will face Saint Leo and Flagler on both Saturday and Sunday. The Wolves will be back at home next Wednesday as they will face Southern Wesleyan for a doubleheader at 2 and 4 PM.
