Wolves Fall Twice on Day One of Old Coast Classic

Newberry Strands 19 Runners in the Two Games

After a hot offensive start to the season, the Newberry Softball Team would get runners on but couldn't find the timely hit as they left 19 runners on base as they fell in a pair of games to Saint Leo and Flagler, the first time the Wolves have tasted defeat this season.

Game One: Saint Leo 13, Newberry 5
The Wolves would start the afternoon with a matchup with the Saint Leo Lions of the Sunshine State Conference and although the Wolves would strike first, a five run Saint Leo half of the fourth would doom the Wolves as they would fall 13-5.

The Scarlet and Gray would strike first as they would load the bases with two outs and would score a run via a Mackenzie Turner bases loaded walk but couldn't scratch across any more. That would be the first of three bases loaded walks Newberry would earn in the game.

However, the Lions would score the eight runs of the game to open up a 8-1 lead. But the Wolves would not go away quietly as they would respond to the Lions' five run top of the fourth with a three run bottom half. Lindsey Foster would earn a walk sandwiched between two singles by Tedi Nunn and Lindsey Foster to load the bases for Mallena Wright. Wright would lace a single to move everyone up 60 feet and score Nunn. Sierra Brogdon would follow with the Wolves second bases loaded walk to make the score 8-3. After a strikeout, Hannah Towery would draw another bases loaded walk to make it 8-4. However, that was all the Wolves would get as Saint Leo would get the next two batters out, stranding three on base for Newberry.

The Lions would score two in the sixth and three in the seventh to make it 13-4 going into the final frame. The Wolves could only manage one run on a Vanessa Wilson RBI single to score Christine Butler in the bottom of the seventh as Newberry would fall for the first time this season.

Game Two: Flagler 6, Newberry 4
Alexandrea Sullivan would hold Flagler to only run one through two innings but a four run third by the Saints would put the Wolves in a 5-0 nothing hole after three. The Wolves would have bases loaded with one out in the second but couldn't get a run home.

Newberry would find their breakthrough in the top of the fourth as an Amber Dalfonso single would score Mackenzie Turner to make it 5-1. The Wolves would get closer in the top of the fifth as a Lindsey Mitchell single would score Emily Hughes and Mallena Wright to make it a 5-3 ballgame. However the Saints would capitalize on a Newberry error and get a run back in the bottom half to make it 6-3 and that's where it would stay until the seventh.

In the top of the seventh the Wolves would get two runners on with a Mallena Wright single and an Emily Hughes walk to bring the tying run to the plate with no one out. However, the Saints would retire the next two batters, bringing up Mackenzie Turner as the last hope for the Wolves. Turner wasn't going to let the game end that easily as she would hit a single, scoring Wright and Turner would advance to second on the throw to have the tying run in scoring position for Newberry with Reagan Smith coming to the plate. However, Smith would strikeout to end the game stranding the two runners on base.

The Wolves will have a chance to bounce back quickly as they will face the same two teams on Sunday at 12:30 and 3:00 PM.
