After Cold Start, Wolves Bats Heat Up in Win Over Flagler

Hill's Three Run Blast Highlights Nine Run Output

St. Augustine, Fla. - Because of inclement weather, the Newberry Softball Team had to wait a while to get day two of the Old Coast Classic started. In the first game against Saint Leo, the Wolves would strike for two early runs but would be held scoreless until the seventh as the Lions would come away with a 6-3 win. However in the second game, the Newberry bats were back to their old form as three multi-run innings helped propel the Wolves to a 9-6 win over the Flagler Saints. The results moved the Wolves to 7-3 on the season.

Game One: Saint Leo 6, Newberry 3
The Lions would hit a home run in the top of the first to open the scoring but the Scarlet and Gray would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Mallena Wright would lead off the inning with a walk and would advance to second on a Emily Hughes sacrifice bunt. Sierra Brogdon would bring home Wright on a fielding error by the Lion's second baseman to tie the game at one a piece. After a lineout, Mackenzie Turner would double and Lindsey Mitchell would hit an RBI single to bring home Brogdon to give the Wolves the 2-1 lead after the first inning.

However, the Lions would go on to score the next five runs and keep the Wolves bats quiet until the seventh with a Tori Rose RBI single to score Madison Truett but it was too little, too late as Saint Leo would emerge with a 6-3 victory.

Game Two: Newberry 9, Flagler 6
Both teams would be held scoreless for the first two innings but the Wolves would break through with three runs in the top of the third, taking advantage of a couple of Flagler errors. Tori Rose would open the inning by reaching on an error and advancing to third on a throwing error on a Hailey Hill bunt single and Rose would score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Mallena Wright would earn a walk and would advance on an Emily Hughes sacrifice bunt to give Newberry two runners in scoring position for Hannah Towery. Towery would respond with a double to right center field, scoring both Wright and Hill to extend the Wolves lead to 3-0.

The Saints would respond back with one of their own in the bottom of the third but Newberry would respond in kind with three runs in the top of the fourth. Reagan Smith would lead off with a double and Tedi Nunn would follow with a single before a Tori Rose foul out would bring up Hailey Hill. The sophomore from Summerville, S.C. would send a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence to extend the Wolves lead to 6-1.

The Saints would again score a run in the bottom half of the inning but a Hailey Hill two RBI single in the top of the fifth would give the Wolves an 8-2 lead. But the Saints would make their final push in the bottom half of the fifth as they would plate four runs on a grand slam to cut the Wolves lead back down to two at 8-6.

However, just as they had done all game, the Wolves responded back as a Kasey Widmyer RBI groundout would score Emily Hughes to make it 9-6. Widmyer would then head back to the circle and hold the Saints scoreless in their final two frames to give her her third complete game of the season and the Wolves the win.

The Newberry Softball Team now returns home for the rest of the month of February as they will play 12 straight games at the Smith Road Complex starting with a double header on Wednesday as they will face the Southern Wesleyan Warriors at 2 and 4 PM.
