Complete Team Performances Lead Newberry to Sweep of Southern Wesleyan

Sullivan and Crowson Shine in Circle. Smith Hits First Career Long Ball.

Newberry, S.C. - After a weekend down in Florida that saw the Newberry Softball Team taste defeat for the first time this season, the Wolves returned to the friendly confines of the Smith Road Complex and picked up right back where they left it as they earned a pair of victories over the Southern Wesleyan Warriors on Wednesday afternoon using a combination of stellar pitching, timely hitting, and outstanding fielding. This was the Wolves 13th and 14th straight win over the Warriors with the last loss coming in 2008.

Game One: Newberry 5, Southern Wesleyan 1
The Wolves would strike early to start the afternoon as they would load the bases with back to back singles by Mallena Wright and Emily Hughes followed by three straight walks by Lindsey Mitchell, Hannah Towery, and Hailey Hill, the latter two would bring home Wright and Hughes to give Newberry an early 2-0 lead.

When all was said and done, it would be all the offense the Wolves would need as Alexandrea Sullivan was phenomenal inside the circle as she would pitch a complete game only allowing two hits and striking out 12, tying her career high set almost one year ago on February 24th, 2021 against Limestone

The only trouble Sullivan would face would come in the fifth and sixth innings as in the fifth the  Warriors would get a walk and then break up Sullivan's no-hit bid in the fifth with a soft hit single to shortstop that Tedi Nunn couldn't field and throw in time. But Sullivan would not flinch as she would punch out Emmy Copeland to end the inning. The Warriors would break up the shutout in the sixth with a lead off home run however Sullivan retired the next three batters in order.

The Wolves would respond to losing the shutout bid by plating three in the bottom of the sixth off of an Emily Hughes RBI triple that scored Mallena Wright and Vanessa Wilson. Lindsey Mitchell would then bring home Hughes with an RBI double of her own to increase the Wolves lead to 5-1, which would be the final scoreline as Sullivan would make short work of the Warriors in the top of the seventh to secure the win for the Wolves.

In addition to having two hits, Mallena Wright would also flash the glove as she would rob the Warriors of hits on numerous occasions.

Game Two: Newberry 9, Southern Wesleyan 0 (F/5 inn.)
Brittany Crowson would up the ante in game two as she would follow Sullivan's stellar performance in the circle with one of her own as she would pitch five shutout innings, only allow one hit, strike out four, and finished the game in under 70 pitches.

Offensively, the Wolves would strike first and strike hard as they would score in four of the five innings. Sierra Brogdon would get the scoring started with an RBI double to score Mallena Wright who led off the inning with a double of her own. In the second inning, Vanessa Wilson would hit an RBI single to Tedi Nunn, who led off the inning with a double. Amber Dalfonso would come home on a Mallena Wright fly out to make it 3-0 after two. After being held scoreless in the third, the Wolves would pull away in the fourth as RBI singles from Dalfonso, Wilson, and Hughes mixed with an RBI groundout from Wright would make it a 6-0 Newberry lead heading to the fifth.

Only needing two runs to make it a mercy rule, Reagan Smith would come to the plate with one out and launch a 1-1 pitch to dead center for her first career home run and the Wolves would get two singles and a walk to have the winning run 60 feet away for Vanessa Wilson. The sophomore would rope a walk-off double to right center that would score two to make it 9-0 and give the Wolves the win.

The Wolves now turn their attention to the weekend as they will welcome the Molloy Lions and the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes to the Palmetto State for a round robin tournament. The Scarlet and Gray are scheduled to play at 11 AM and 3 PM on Saturday and 1 PM and 3 PM on Sunday.
