Wolves go 1-1 on Day One of Round Robin

Newberry Suffers First Home Loss After Tying Home Run Brought Back

Newberry, S.C. - The Newberry Softball Team used two big innings to put away the Molly Lions, 8-0,  but were kept at arm's length by the Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern falling by a scoreline of 11-6. The results moved the Wolves to 10-4 on the year and the Scarlet and Gray fell at home for the first time this season.

Game One: Newberry 8, Molloy 0 (Final/5 Inn.)
The Wolves started off the morning by hosting the Molloy Lions of the East Coast Conference. This was the Lions' first game of the season and the Wolves wasted no time to strike as they would use two first inning RBI singles from Hannah Towery and Tedi Nunn to take a 3-0 lead after the first frame.

In the circle, Kasey Widmyer would tame the Lions' offense as she would pitch her fourth complete game of the season and only allowing one hit and walk two via hit by pitch, both of those coming in the second inning, en route to the shutout..

The Wolves' offense would be kept at bay until the fifth inning as Lindsey Mitchell would lead off with a single and Hannah Towery would follow with a double and the Wolves were suddenly in business trying to end the game. Hailey Hill would bring home Mitchell with an RBI single and Tedi Nunn would bring home both Towery and Hill with an RBI double down the right field line and suddenly the Wolves had doubled their lead to 6-0. After a Molloy pitching change, Tori Rose would earn a walk before Kasey Widmyer would help her own cause with an RBI double to right, scoring Nunn and moving the winning run to third base in Rose. Mallena Wright would seal the win with a sacrifice fly and the Wolves had their second run-rule victory in a row/

Game Two: Georgia Southwestern 11, Newberry 6
The Hurricanes would come out of the gate swinging as they would plate two in the top of the first. But the Wolves would cut that lead in half using a sacrifice bunt from Amber Dalfonso and a sacrifice fly from Lindsey Mitchell to cash in a Mallena Wright leadoff double to make it 2-1 after one inning of play. After Brittany Crowson worked out of a bases loaded jam, Newberry would then tie the game up in the bottom of the second with a leadoff home run from Tedi Nunn and would get Tori Rose to third base but couldn't bring her home and we remained tied at two after two innings.

The Hurricanes would strike back with two runs in the top of the third to take the lead back at 4-2 and would add on in the fifth inning with using two bases loaded walks and an RBI single to increase their lead to 7-2. The Wolves would respond with two of their own in the fifth as Hannah Towey, who had just had a home run ball go just foul, would launch an opposite field home run to bring the Wolves back within 7-4.

The Hurricanes would capitalize on a Newberry error to get a run back in the top of the sixth but the Wolves would have an optimal opportunity to tie the game after they capitalized on a Tori Rose double with an RBI fielder's choice by Mallena Wright. After a walk from Mady Brown, Lindsey Mitchell came to the plate representing the tying run and hit a ball to dead center field that seemed destined to clear the fence but was brought back by the Hurricanes' Hailey Pinette, ending the inning and the Wolves chances of tying the game.

Georgia Southwestern would pull away in the top of the seventh as they would plate three more runs. Newberry would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh but could only get one run across as they would fall at home for the first time this season.

The Scarlet and Gray will return to the Smith Road Complex on Sunday as they will face Molloy at 1:00 PM and Georgia Southwestern at 3:00 PM
