Newberry, S.C. - After scoring 14 total runs on Saturday, the Newberry Softball Team surpassed that in the first game on Sunday as they scored the third most runs in program history in a 19-2 five inning win over the Molloy Lions. The Wolves would continue to hit the ball hard in game two against Georgia Southwestern but this time the ball always seemed to find a Hurricane glove as Newberry would fall 13-3 to finish the weekend 2-2.
Newberry 19, Molloy 2 (F/5 Inn.)
Both teams would be retired in order with their first at bats of the game and the Lions would load the bases in the second inning but Lindsey Foster would get a pop up double play to get out of the inning unscathed.Â
From there the Wolves would pile on the runs, starting with a seven run bottom of the second with RBIs from Tedi Nunn, Lindsey Foster, Vanessa Wilson, Mallena Wright, and capped off by a Lindsey Mitchell two-run home run.
The Lions would get their two runs in the top of the third with an RBI groundout and an RBI double. However, the Scarlet and Gray would respond in kind with five runs in the bottom half with bases loaded walks from Vanessa Wilson and Sierra Brogdon, a sacrifice fly from Lindsey Mitchell, and Hannah Towery and Tori Rose RBI Doubles.
Newberry would get seven more in the bottom of the fourth from a wild pitch and error by the Lions, a Leah Evans RBI fielder's choice, a Hannah Towery two RBI single, and the scoring onslaught was capped off by a Hailey Hill two run home run to left center.
In total, every member of the starting lineup would reach base once and drive in at least one run.
In the circle, Lindsey Foster would only allow the two runs on six hits and only walked two batters. She faced 22 batters total, only seven over the minimum of 15.
Georgia Southwestern 13, Newberry 3
In game two of the afternoon, it seemed that the Wolves offensive luck went the complete opposite direction as they would make solid contact all game but the ball would never seem to drop for the Scarlet and Gray.
The Hurricanes would get three runs in the top of the first off of a three run home run but
Kasey Widmyer would work out of a bases loaded jam to keep the score there. Widmyer would make short work of the Hurricanes in the second and the Wolves would cut the lead to one via RBI singles from
Tedi Nunn and
Vanessa Wilson. The Wilson single would put two runners on with only one out but the Hurricanes would retire the next two batters to quell the Newberry rally.
Unfortunately, that would be the closest that Newberry would get as Georgia Southwestern would score the next ten runs, highlighted by a five run fifth and four run seventh to make the score 13-2 heading to the Wolves final at bat. Newberry would get the deficit to ten with a Mallena Wright sacrifice fly scoring Leah Evans on a close play at the plate but that was it as the Hurricanes would get the strikeout of Towery to end the game.
The Wolves will now continue non-conference play and their 12-game home stand as they welcome the Augusta Jaguars to the Smith Road Complex on Tuesday. Those games are scheduled for 2 and 4 PM.
